NYC family in Israel: US remains land of 'freedom'

JERUSALEM ? It was in August 2011 when the Goldstein family decided it was time to give up what America had to offer and move their life more than 5,500 miles away to Israel.

Aviva and Seth Goldstein left their families and a fantastic life in the Bronx for what is perceived by many as a country torn by war and conflict.

One year after their move you couldn't find a happier and more enthusiastic family in Jerusalem. Aviva's huge and warm smile doesn?t vanish from her face as she juggles a move to a new apartment and raising three girls: Aliana, 7, Tahila, 5, and Liba, 3.

For Aviva and Seth coming to Israel wasn?t about finding a greener pasture somewhere else? ?? but as Jews they felt like not coming to the Holy Land was like standing on the sidelines of history. It was always a place that just called to them, where they dreamed of living.

As the Goldstein family lay down a nice picnic spread near the old Jerusalem railway tracks, an area dubbed as the Israeli version of New York City's High Line, I asked Aviva and Seth what America represents for them and what role America has in the world today.

"The first thing that would come to mind when you think of America is liberty and freedom," Seth said. "I don?t think the U.S. has retreated from that identity and I don't think it lost a piece of that identity. I think it stands for freedom and democracy [now] as much as ever.?

"For me," Aviva said, "America is also freedom and liberty. But I think that there is a big piece of America that?s comfort, with liberty and security, and that there is mobility within that.?

'Economic opportunity'
Both Aviva and Seth have had careers in education, but at this point Aviva described herself as a "full time mom," while Seth works at the Shalem Center, a research institute in Jerusalem. ?

"I think America stands for economic opportunity as well,? Seth said. "Also for all sorts of religious opportunities, that go hand-in- hand with freedom. It really is a place that you can grow in all sorts of uninhibited ways and be successful in all sorts of remarkable ways.?

How did they think the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan changed America?

"I think it stretched America's finances and it reminded the world that America stands for something more than just isolating itself in a bubble, but that it has a responsibility to the rest of the world," Seth said. "The extent that America was involved in it is a reflection of its sense of responsibility to other nations, to other people, to humanity."

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

Aviva also believed the U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan was a positive thing.? "I think that as Jews, who always had an interest in Israeli world politics, I think it was easier for us to see the evil," said Aviva.? "I think we?re used to being stuck with really bad neighbors,? so on some level it was good that America was involved."

As for their three girls, Aviva said the move has just caused them all to flourish,? even though they miss their grandparents. "Thank God for iPads," Aviva said. She was referring to the fact they can see and talk to their family back in the U.S. almost for free using the device and the Internet.

"Coming here is the fulfillment of a dream," Aviva explained. "I remember when we were dating 10 years ago, walking the streets of Manhattan fantasying about raising our unborn children in Jerusalem and now it's our reality. It's nothing short of a miracle."

Colorado high school football recruiting rankings for class of 2013 ( Denver Post )

Football recruiting, over the past few years, had taken a decidedly out-of-state turn. Things appear to be changing.

Whereas the top kids from the classes of 2011 and 2012 settled on college choices like Stanford, Syracuse, Washington, Ohio State, Auburn and Nebraska, this year's crop of seniors has elected to stay close to home.

Of the top 15 recruits this year, based on the early rankings from The Denver Post, seven have already committed to in-state programs. Two more players, just outside the early rankings, will also stay in-state.

Compare that to the four who stayed home last cycle, and the five in 2011.

Headlining the group of in-staters this cycle is Chaparral tight end Mitchell Parsons, ranked second, who

Chaparral's Mitch Parsons, who is ranked second. (Craig F. Walker, The Denver Post)

committed to Colorado in March.

"I didn't go into it saying I wanted to stay in-state, but now that I've decided to stay in-state I'm proud to be able to represent Colorado," Parsons said this week. "Now, it's a big thing."

Colorado State has been the most impressive in-state program, with five early in-state commitments, including Douglas County offensive lineman Blake Nowland, ranked seventh.

"We need to get as many guys up there as possible from Colorado," Bear Creek offensive lineman Jake Bennett, ranked 12th, said when he committed to Colorado State in April.

The change in coaching staffs ? CU hired Jon Embree prior to last season, CSU tabbed Jim McElwain this offseason ? has played a big role.

"That's a big part of it," Parsons said.

But not everyone is staying within state borders. Top-ranked Chris Fox, a 6-foot-6, 297-pound lineman from Ponderosa has committed to Michigan, and Valor Christian quarterback Luke Del Rio, a transfer from Florida who is ranked third, will attend Oklahoma State.

Nuforce Cube

Speakers usually have to be big to put out a lot of sound. The bigger a speaker is, the louder it gets. Conversely, the smaller a speaker is, the softer its maximum volume generally is. Nuforce tries to break this trend with the Nuforce Cube, a less-than-3-inch cube with a built-in USB digital-to-analog converter. It gets loud for its size, but its $119 (direct) price and poor bass response keep it from being more than a pretty mini-speaker.

The Nuforce Cube looks cute. It's a rounded 2.3-inch by 2.8-inch (H,W x D) near-cube with a metal shell, a plastic base and back, and a removable fabric grille. It's available in black, silver, blue, or red versions, and comes with a USB-to-mini-USB cable, a 3.5mm audio cable, and a carrying pouch. It has no physical controls and only three ports: a mini-USB connector, 3.5mm input, and 3.5mm headphone output. The speaker is powered through the mini-USB port, and a battery inside keeps it working as a powered speaker for several hours when it's not connected.

While you can use the cube as a speaker with a 3.5mm input, it's intended for use via USB as a combination speaker and digital-to-analog converter (DAC). If you plug it into a PC through USB, it shows up as a sound device, taking over the audio capabilities of the computer. A small red light on the front indicates it's plugged into USB, or is running on battery with a device connected over the 3.5mm port. If you want to get the same audio through 3.5mm that you would get through USB, you need to charge it over USB before treating it like a regular speaker.

Based on its small size, it's hard to imagine the Nuforce Cube can put out a lot of sound. It does get surprisingly loud and pleasantly clear, however. But with a few caveats. The Gipsy Kings' cover of "Hotel California" came in crisp and warm, with the subtle strings of the opening of the song filling my workspace. However, the speaker failed at our bass test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout." It distorted immediately and only became crunchier and further warped as the song progressed. While the speaker might work suitably for jazz, classical music, and rock, don't expect metal or dubstep to be close to listenable.

The Nuforce Cube looks cool and puts out a lot of sound for its size, but its $120 price tag and poor bass handling make it a novelty speaker. If you want decent sound with more features for less, the Logitech Mini Boombox ($99, 4 stars) is wireless if your computer supports Bluetooth, has a 3.5mm audio input if it doesn't, and can work as a speakerphone and portable speaker for your smartphone or tablet.

Darryle Pollack: Surviving Cancer: It's Complicated

Cancer is complicated.

And being a survivor can be complicated, too -- confounding, confronting, and confusing.

Even starting with the word itself. It can be confusing to know exactly what is meant by cancer survivor. So for the first time in the 18 years of my own survival, I looked up the definition on the American Cancer Society website.

Survivor can have several different meanings when applied to people with cancer. Some people use the word to refer to anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer. For example, someone living with cancer may be considered a survivor. Some people use the term when referring to someone who has completed cancer treatment. And still others call a person a survivor if he or she has lived several years past a cancer diagnosis. The American Cancer Society believes that each individual has the right to define his or her own experience with cancer and considers a cancer survivor to be anyone who defines himself or herself this way, from the time of diagnosis throughout the balance of his or her life.

I love the idea of survivors defining ourselves.

Over the past few decades, being a cancer survivor has changed from something hidden or private to a badge of honor. Today the label signifies a warrior, a source of constant inspiration, always brave and upbeat, walking to raise money or climbing a mountain.

Obviously all survivors aren't climbing mountains. And many of us don't feel anything remotely close to upbeat. Or brave.

I feel fortunate that I survived pretty much intact -- minus a few key body parts. But there are many other effects that you can't see.

Cancer invades not only your body but every other area of your life. After treatment, although you may survive, you may be left with damage. The heart and other organs. The immune system. Emotions. Finances. Intimacy. Stress. Fatigue. There's almost no place the tentacles of cancer don't reach.

Today those tentacles have infiltrated into the health and lives of 12 million cancer survivors in the United States alone. Over the past 40 years, our numbers have quadrupled -- and are growing every day.

The sheer size of those numbers, the broad spectrum of ways cancer impacts lives, and the high costs -- financial and otherwise -- pretty much demand that we pay attention as a society to the topic of cancer survivorship.

And it's complicated to begin to understand the issues and needs of cancer survivors, and what can be done to improve the quantity -- and quality -- of life after cancer.

Scientists are beginning to find those answers, and to devote attention to survivorship as a study in itself -- another part of the cancer journey.

There is very exciting research in many disciplines that intersect with survivorship, and a very exciting event bringing them all together as a joint project of the National Cancer Institute's Office of Cancer Survivorship, the American Cancer Society, LIVESTRONG, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Cancer Survivorship Research Conference takes place this week in Arlington, Va. with this year's theme: Translating Science to Care. The American Cancer Society says:

This meeting is a forum for researchers, clinicians, cancer survivors, advocates, program planners, policymakers, and public health experts to learn about current and emerging cancer survivorship research.

The conference addresses topics that range from obesity to fatigue to aging to resilience to relationships -- all geared to take what is learned in the lab and apply it directly to the enormous community of survivors.

I feel especially lucky to attend, as a survivor and representative of the American Cancer Society Blogger Advisory Council. I'll be sharing what I learn there -- to help other survivors live longer and stronger.

One thing I've already learned in years of connecting and communicating with the community of cancer survivors -- though they may not be in the Himalayas, they are climbing mountains every day, and every survivor I've ever met is inspiring.

For anyone who is interested in learning more about survivorship, I will post information from the conference on Twitter; after the conference on the HuffPost and on my blog: I never signed up for this.....

Astronauts Shannon Walker David Saint-Jacques test a probe in the waters off Key Largo, Fla. Their research may help NASA set foot on an asteroid someday.

NASA may have retired its shuttles, but it has its sights on sending astronauts deeper into space than ever before.

These voyages are years away, but on Monday, astronauts are heading underwater to take part in a simulation that will help them figure out how they might explore one possible new destination: A near-Earth asteroid.

It'll be the space agency's 16th NEEMO expedition ? NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations ? commanded by astronaut Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger. She flew on one of the last space shuttle missions and even helped prepare Atlantis for its final launch.

"It was a very bittersweet time," says Metcalf-Lindenburger, who really wants to go into space again. In the meantime, she's commanding a four-person crew that's putting on scuba gear instead of space suits. She says we all have to move on.

"Like in all things. I just had my daughter finish up her last day of preschool before she goes off to kindergarten. We have to shut chapters and begin new chapters and we had to do that in the space program too," Metcalf-Lindenburger says.

Her crew will spend two weeks working underwater, which is the best approximation on this planet of what it would be like to operate in the zero gravity of an asteroid.

Their base will be an underwater lab called Aquarius. It's about the size of a school bus and sits 60 feet under the surface a few miles off the coast of Key Largo, Fla.

Metcalf-Lindenburger says floating underwater is a lot like floating in space.

"Water is a nice way to free your body and get to explore a different way of movement. Since we're so stuck with walking here on Earth, it's nice to float around, flip around ? just like in space," she says.

How To Hammer Rocks In Space

Cornell University astronomer Steve Squyers is heading to Aquarius for the second time. His last NEEMO mission was cut short because of a hurricane.

He's thrilled to get another chance to help figure out what kinds of equipment might help people do research on an asteroid someday. Last time, Squyres and his crew mates strapped jet packs to their backs and had a blast zooming through the water.

"They were great for moving around. You'd see a rock outcrop 30 meters away. and you'd go flying over to it," he says.

But they learned jet packs were terrible if you needed to stay still for any length of time, like say, if you want to take a sample from an asteroid.

"If you just do something as simple as hit a rock with a hammer, you're going to go flying off into space, so we've got to develop a whole new set of tricks and tools for operating on the surface of an asteroid," Squyres says.

This time, they're going to see whether mini submarines might allow them to hover in place.

"Imagine this little submarine with a six-foot-long beam sticking off the front of it and an astronaut on the front of that like a hood ornament," Squyres says.

NASA hopes to start sending astronauts and equipment to asteroids after 2025.

What's So Interesting About Asteroids?

You might wonder why anyone would want to go to an asteroid, but Squyers says there are lots of reasons.

Some asteroids are made of stuff like metals, that some people think could be harvested. Squyers says we need to learn all we can about asteroids to understand more about the origin of the solar system and to protect ourselves.

"Asteroids are a threat. Asteroids have hit the Earth before, we know that," he explains. "Asteroids have caused mass extinctions. A small asteroid hitting the earth wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Unless we as a species know how to prevent it."

Just sending robots to asteroids isn't enough, he says. That means a lot coming from Sqyures considering he's a robot guy. He's the principal investigator for the Mars Rover project.

"What our state-of-the-art robot on Mars can do in a day, you can do in about 30 seconds," he says.

Metcalf-Lindenburger predicts that as soon as NASA figures out how to get people to an asteroid, people will want to go there.

"Humans are explorers by nature," she says. "We've been doing it for a very very long time." When NASA finally does sends people deeper into space, she says, she hopes to be one of them.

The Amateur Family Historian: Family Tree Rebuild Update - 6/10/11

All main branches have been entered back to the earliest ancestor listed in the family histories for that line as shown in my original family tree rebuild post?here.

I am sourcing information from?A Genealogical History of the Kolb, Kulp, or Culp Family for individuals also listed in?A Genealogical History of the Hunsicker Family. Once I have completed this I will begin sourcing all of the original documents I have plus documents I can easily acquire from places such as Ancestry.com.

As I have added the information from the various family histories that even though the source is original (despite the fact that I have copies that have be reproduced either on papter or electronically (or both) I have come to realize that the information is secondary (not primary) in that the authors were reporting second hand information that they found in their research without citing the source. Therefore, until I find a primary source or several secondary sources of information I will consider these facts as unproven.?

Chosen Answer:

Get 40 minutes of cardio (walking, jogging, swimming, etc). That?s how long it takes to burn fats properly.
I?d also mix up your routine a bit. Do weight training and cardio M-W-F, increase flexibility and strength T-Th (yoga and pilates is great for this).
If you eat properly and work out 3 times a week you can lose about 2lbs of fat a week.
Don?t look at the number on the scale, but instead look at the changes in your body. You may actually GAIN weight as your fat is replaced with muscle, but it?s good weight.
You can?t target fat loss from one area, either. Fat is burnt evenly around the entire body. You can, however, target muscle building.

Sprint gives update on EVO 4G LTE inventory status

HTC EVO 4G LTE

So about that Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE ... We know it's cleared Customs, following that pesky International Trade Commission review. And we know preorders have and are still being delivered, but apparently the bulk of the phones are still in transit. Sprint this morning has given us a bit of a non-update update, which reads thusly:

While Sprint customers who pre-ordered their HTC EVO 4G LTE received their device last week, Sprint continues to wait for our full inventory from HTC.

We recently learned that HTC devices have been released by U.S. Customs. We expect shipments of HTC EVO 4G LTE to enter the U.S. in the next few days.  An exact availability date for HTC EVO 4G LTE will be communicated as soon as possible.

We’ll continue updating this post as we have new information to share.

Thank you everybody for your interest and continued patience.

So in-store availability is still up in the air. Soon as we know something, you will, too.
