German minister: No room for Greece concessions

(AP) ? Germany's finance minister said in an interview published Sunday that he can't see room for further concessions to Greece, insisting anew that the country must implement far-reaching reforms and cut its budget deficit.

International debt inspectors are scrutinizing Greece's finances and its progress in implementing unpopular budget cuts and reforms demanded in exchange for the rescue loan program that is keeping the country afloat.

Greek officials have called for more time to implement the measures, but patience among creditors is running extremely short. If the inspectors' report, expected in September, is damning, Athens could stop receiving rescue loans and face a disorderly bankruptcy and exit from the 17-nation euro.

"The aid program is already very accommodating. I cannot see that there is still scope for further concessions," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted as telling the Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

As part of its austerity efforts, Greece has achieved a remarkable reduction of its budget deficit from 15.8 percent in 2009 to 9.1 percent last year. However, the country is considerably off-target in other areas of reform.

Athens largely blames this on a deeper-than-anticipated recession. However, a political crisis sparked by fierce rivalry between Greece's main political parties stalled the reforms for three months, and a three-party coalition finally emerged in June after two inconclusive elections.

Schaeuble said that "the problem did not arise because of flaws in the (rescue) program but because it was insufficiently implemented by Greece."

The country, he added, "cannot get around improving its competitiveness substantially through far-reaching reforms. In addition, Greece must achieve a sustainable level of debt by reducing its deficit."

"It doesn't help to speculate now about more money or more time," Schaeuble was quoted as saying.

Germany's vice chancellor, Economy Minister Philipp Roesler, openly questioned last week whether Greece would satisfy the conditions to receive further aid and said the prospect of a Greek exit from the euro has "lost its horror." He defended those comments, which prompted sharp criticism from Germany's opposition, in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"I remain skeptical as to whether Greece will actually have implemented the agreed reform conditions" when the debt inspectors report, Roesler told Deutschlandfunk radio.

"There can be no discounts on reforms," he said. "And that means: no further payments if the reforms are not fulfilled."

Enbridge races to clean up Wisconsin oil spill, restart line

GRAND MARSH, Wisconsin (Reuters) - Canada's Enbridge Inc. on Sunday raced to repair a major pipeline that spilled more than 1,000 barrels of oil in a Wisconsin field, provoking fresh ire from Washington over the latest in a series of leaks.

The spill on Friday -- almost two years to the day after a ruptured Enbridge line fouled part of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan -- has forced the closure of a major conduit for Canadian light crude shipments to U.S. refiners and threatens to further damage the reputation of a company that launched a more than $3 billion expansion program just two months ago.

Enbridge said it intended to begin repairs to Line 14 late on Saturday after making "excellent progress" in clean-up, allowing for visual inspection of the line. But it still did not know what had caused the incident and provided no estimate on when the 318,000 barrels-per-day Line 14 would resume service.

An official with the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) said two inspectors were at the site on Sunday, and that all of the pooled oil had been cleaned up.

"The line has been uncovered to begin removing the failed section and send it to a metallurgical lab for examination," PHMSA spokesman Damon Hill said.

Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are also on site, Enbridge said in a statement.

An image of the area posted on Enbridge's website showed a patch of damp, blackened earth near a stand of trees about one-third the size of a football field. It found some oil on two small farm ponds, but said they did not connect to moving waterways and that drinking wells did not seem to be affected.

Although the spill appeared to be relatively small and quickly contained, it comes at a delicate time for Enbridge, which suffered another leak in Alberta, Canada, a month ago and endured a scathing report from U.S. safety regulators over its handling of the Michigan incident in 2010, with employees likened to the "Keystone Kops" for their bungled response.

"Enbridge is fast becoming to the Midwest what BP was to the Gulf of Mexico, posing troubling risks to the environment," U.S. Representative Ed Markey, the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, said in a statement.

"The company must be forthcoming about this entire incident, and deserves a top-to-bottom review of their safety culture, procedures and standards," said Markey, an outspoken critic of increasing imports of Canada's heavy oil sands crude.

Canada is the largest source of foreign crude for the United States, supplying over 2.4 million bpd of the more than 8.3 million bpd of imported by the nation on average in July. Enbridge's lines, the world's largest crude oil pipeline system, carry the lion's share of those shipments.

Just two months ago, Enbridge kicked off one of the most sweeping expansions in its history, announcing a multibillion-dollar series of projects aimed at moving western Canada and North Dakota oil to Eastern refineries and eliminating costly bottlenecks in the U.S. Midwest.

Line 14 is a 24-inch diameter pipe that was installed in 1998, making it a relatively new line. Enbridge said it had been inspected twice in the past five years.

BULGING STOCKS

Analysts said that the move, which comes as oil inventories in the Midwest hit record highs, may have a limited impact on crude oil futures when trading opens in Asia.

"I think that the pipeline (outage) is more likely to have a greater company impact that it will on the oil (futures) market -- I think that global growth and geopolitics will be more important than the pipeline," said Jason Schenker, president of Prestige Economics LLC in Austin, Texas.

U.S. and global oil prices have been balancing the risks of a large-scale disruption in Iranian crude against the struggling world economy this year. A surge in production from North Dakota and Canada has built up inventories in the U.S. Midwest due to a shortfall of capacity to move the oil into the Gulf Coast refining region.

Schenker said the impact of the Enbridge disruption on Chicago refineries will depend largely on how much crude they have stockpiled as well as the length of the outage. Total Midwest crude inventories have hit a record high over 110 million barrels over the past two months, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

TWO LANDOWNERS, ONE HOUSE 'COVERED'

In most cases, smaller pipeline leaks can be repaired quickly, although regulators may require significant work if they find any cause for alarm. Following the leak in Michigan two years ago -- which spilled roughly 15 times more oil than the Wisconsin leak if initial estimates of the Friday incident prove correct -- one line was shut for more than two months.

Enbridge said two landowners had been affected and that one family had been relocated for their safety and comfort, but that most of the spill was restricted to the pipeline right-of-way. It kept its estimate of the spill at around 1,200 barrels -- about as much as would fit in six very large oil tanker trucks.

"The house right next to where the pipeline broke got covered with oil," said Patrick Swadish, who lives about a mile northwest of the spill site in a rural area of mostly farmland, some 80 miles north of the college town of Madison.

Oil trucks, Enbridge vehicles and about a dozen crews were working in the area, which had been cordoned off by sheriff deputies. Local law enforcement officials said they had been told it may take up to 30 days to clean the area.

Enbridge also said it had briefly shut down two larger adjacent lines -- the 400,000 bpd Line 61 and the 670,000 bpd Line 6A -- but both were pumping again within a day. Together with Line 14, they form the backbone of Lakehead, a 2.5 million bpd network that is the main route for Canadian exports.

Another line, the 180,000 bpd Line 13, which carries diluents from Chicago to Edmonton, Alberta, would be restarted once it was confirmed the release had not had an impact on it, it said.

PREVIOUS SPILLS

Just weeks ago, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board blasted Enbridge's handling of the July 2010 rupture of its Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan, which led to more than 20,000 barrels of crude leaking into the Kalamazoo River.

The NTSB said it found a complete breakdown of company safety measures, and that Enbridge employees performed like "Keystone Kops" trying to contain it. The rupture went undetected for 17 hours.

U.S. pipeline regulators fined it $3.7 million for the spill, their largest ever penalty.

The incidents, plus the most recent spill in Alberta, have caused furor just as the company seeks approval for its C$6 billion Northern Gateway pipeline to Canada's West Coast amid staunch opposition from environmental groups and native communities that warn against oil spills.

Israeli minister says terror act in Bulgaria will not stop his countrymen from travelling

SOFIA, Bulgaria - The suicide bombing that killed six people, five of them Israelis, in a Bulgarian seaside resort will not stop Israelis from travelling wherever they wish, a government minister from the Jewish state said Monday during a visit to the eastern European nation.

Like other Israeli leaders, Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov also blamed the attack on Iran and the militant group Hezbollah, but Bulgarian officials declined to name any culprits until their investigation was complete.

Misezhnikov first met with representatives of Bulgaria's Jewish community at the Sofia Synagogue during his trip, which came less than a week after the bus bombing in the Black Sea resort town of Burgas. Five vacationing Israelis and a Bulgarian bus driver were killed and dozens were wounded in the Wednesday attack.

Bulgaria, a country of 7.3 million, has become a popular travel destination in recent years for Israelis. Last year, it hosted 8.7 million foreign tourists, including 135,000 from Israel, and before the attack, tour operators had expected their number to reach 150,000 this year.

Misezhnikov also said Monday that Bulgarian security had prevented a terrorist attack against Israeli tourists in the country several months ago. His spokesman, Amnon Liberman, later confirmed his comments during the visit, but would not elaborate.

Since last week's attack, Bulgarian media have reported that thousands of Israelis have cancelled bookings or cut short their trips. On one TV station, a representative of the Ortanna tour company said about 10,000 Israelis had scheduled vacations in Bulgaria through the firm this summer but that about half had cancelled after the attack.

But Bulgarian officials have downplayed those reports, and Misezhnikov insisted his countrymen would not be scared into isolation.

"After what happened in Burgas, we will continue to travel as tourists ? in Israel and in Bulgaria and wherever else we wish," Misezhnikov said. "We will not reward the terrorist act. We will not react to it with fear."

The Israeli minister said his country and Bulgaria "have a common enemy: international terrorism ? financed and supported by Iran and other countries connected with Iran. This is the common enemy of all countries which fight for freedom worldwide, and we must confront this enemy together."

Camera footage showed the suspected bomber wandering in and out of the bus terminal in Burgas, wearing a baseball cap over long hair, a T-shirt and plaid shorts and carrying a bulky backpack. Authorities have examined his fingerprints, his DNA and his fake Michigan driver's license, and are probing whether or not he had an accomplice.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolai Mladenov said Monday that "until we are through with our investigation we won't be fingering any culprit," referring to reports that Hezbollah was behind the attack.

"Our top priority now is to pinpoint the movements of the presumable suicide bomber to identify all connections which will probably reach out of Bulgaria," he said.

Israel has asked other countries in Europe to increase security in bus parking lots used by Israelis and at airports, and Bulgarian police have responded by stepping up security at their country's airports. Flights arriving from Israel will not be publicly announced, and Israeli passengers will be kept in a separate and secure area.

Since the fall of communism, Israel has maintained friendly ties with Bulgaria, a nation that resisted Nazi demands to deport Jews to death camps in World War II. Many of them migrated to Israel when the communists seized power after the war, and about 5,000 Jews live in Bulgaria today.

"Israeli tourists are important for us, not just for economic reasons, but because for them Bulgaria is like a second home country ? they feel good here," Prime Minister Boiko Borisov said after talks with Misezhnikov.

Protect Your Pets in Extreme Heat : General Nightmare

July 23, 2012 by Admin ? ?

Triple-digit temperatures are spreading across the US like a heavy, hot blanket, and its not over yet! As you take precautions to protect yourself in this heat wave and upcoming hot summer months, dont forget to protect our pets. Heat-related illness impacts animals too.

In my book, Extreme Weather, I interviewed veterinarians Dr. Charlotte Krugler and Dr. Adam Eichelberger from Clemson University in South Carolina. They offer terrific tips and answer questions on how to protect your pets from extreme heat. Here is an excerpt:

How do pets react in hot and humid conditions?

Dogs and cats often cool themselves by panting and also by sweating from their foot pads.

How do you know if it is too hot for your pet?

A pet owner should note how their pet normally breathes when lying quietly compared to light activity and vigorous exercise. Then theyll be more likely to notice abnormal clinical signs when a pet is too hot ? such as heavy panting when not exercising, open-mouth breathing, inactivity, lack of appetite, mental dullness, and diarrhea.

When temperatures get hot, pets should not be encouraged to undergo vigorous activity for prolonged periods. Vigorous activity on a hot day increases the chances of a pet overheating, so owners should be especially vigilant during these times. This means:

- Never leave a pet unattended in a car on a warm or hot day.
- Keep fresh water available ? cool when possible.
- Provide protection from direct sunlight; allow access to shade and shelter.
- Ensure that pets are not confined in areas without air flow on hot and humid days.

What should you do if you suspect your pet is overheated?

If pet overheating is suspected, the pet should be taken to a veterinarian immediately. In the interim, cool water (not warm, not cold) can be applied directly, or via dampened towels, to the pets foot pads, to areas under armpits, inside back legs, and underside of the belly to help lower the pets body temperature.

Can animals get sunburn?

Yes, animals can get sunburned (including dogs, cats, horses, pigs), so any bright day with direct exposure can result in a sunburn. Some animals seem to be more susceptible. Sunburned areas on white cats (usually ear tips) and pink-skinned areas on horses can progress to skin cancers.
Certain diets can induce photosensitivity, which will lead to sunburned skin in some animals.

Is heat tougher on certain breeds than others?

It seems that dog breeds with very thick, dense coats can have a tougher time in the heat. Some arctic breeds may be more suited to cooler climates. Also, black dogs are believed to absorb more heat into their bodies and seem to have problems on hot days, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. Very thick-coated dog breeds may benefit from being shaved down by an experienced pet groomer once or twice during the hot season.

What are common mistakes pet owners make in the warm-weather months?

The most serious mistake is to leave a pet in a closed automobile on a hot day. Leaving the windows open will not prevent the temperature of the car, and then of the pet, from rising.
Another common mistake is overexercising a dog on a hot day and not allowing the pet to cool down properly after a period of exercise. When dogs accompany owners on activities such as jogging, hiking, beach trips, etc., water should be provided at regular intervals and rest periods provided.

This exerpt is from the Extreme Heat chapter of my book, Extreme Weather. Heres more about the book:

Flash floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, mudslides, thunderstorms, and wildfires ? these devastating events are happening around the world at an alarming rate. As a Meteorologist on CNN and HLN, Bonnie Schneider reports on these natural disasters, explaining when theyre likely to strike, and telling viewers how to respond when they do. In Extreme Weather, Schneider distills that information into a guide for readers. She interviews experts from a wide variety of agencies ? including FEMA and NOAA ? to provide a comprehensive understanding of the science behind weather patterns and the latest thinking on how to act in dangerous conditions. Ranging from topics that cover every season and every climate, Schneider introduces the reader to the best course of action during weather emergencies, including:

*how to handle extreme weather scenarios in your car, outside, on a boat or at home

*how to prepare for potential dangers, such as deadly lightning, when planning a camping trip, vacation or sports outing

*what you need to have at home to protect against floods, earthquakes, or severe storms

*how to protect your home from rapidly spreading wildfire

*how to create a family evacuation plan for different emergencies

*making sure your beloved pet is taken care of in time of disaster

Drawing on actual survivor stories, Extreme Weather reminds readers that disaster can strike at any time, changing your life forever.

Found In Musical Translation: Higgs Boson Explained

Finding the Higgs boson was an important discovery. But for all of the publicity the particle has received, how many could explain what it does? Host Scott Simon talks with the researchers who have turned the recently discovered Higgs boson into music.

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

It's been over a week since scientists announced that they've found the Higgs boson particle. It's an important discovery. They say that although the Higgs boson particle is small - or, come to think of it, perhaps because of it - it holds the universe together. But for all the publicity the particle's received, how many of us could explain what it actually does? Well, here's the announcement from scientists in Switzerland.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: We have observed a new boson with a mass of 125.3 + or - .6 GeV at 4.9 standard deviations. Thank you.

(APPLAUSE)

SIMON: Which didn't quite clear it up for all of us, but there is one man...

DOMENICO VICINAZA: Yeah, so my name is Domenico Vicinaza.

SIMON: ...who heard those words and immediately thought of music.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

SIMON: It's the soundtrack, if you please, of the Higgs boson. Domenico Vicinaza is a particle physicist and a musician. He works at DANTE, a non-profit research organization in the United Kingdom, and his job is to try to see music in science. At the conference in Switzerland, a huge graph displayed the evidence for the Higgs.

VICINAZA: I looked at the graph and I say, oh, I really want to make it something.

SIMON: He saw the line on the graph going from left to right and thought it could translate into musical notes, moving through a song. Points along the line became notes on sheet music. And as you listen, for the most part, they form a playful baseline melody. Now, scientifically, this is just background noise. But then there's a big bump in the line. The song does the same thing.

VICINAZA: You can hear really high pitched notes, an F and C and E.

SIMON: Here it is again.

(SOUNDBITE OF TAPE BEING REWOUND)

SIMON: Listen for the part where the notes jump noticeably higher.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

SIMON: The high notes are the bump, and that bump is the Higgs boson. If you still can't quite hear the particle, Domenico Vicinaza and his team have added a few more musical instruments, including maracas.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

SIMON: Maracas - the sound of the universe. Mr. Vicinaza says he hopes this music will help people realize some of the same kind of elemental loveliness that a scientist discerns in the Higgs boson.

VICINAZA: That graph for a particle physicist contains a kind of inner beauty or special beauty that can be translated into other fields.

SIMON: And the next one, he says, will be a Higgs boson ringtone for cell phones. Oh, excuse me, the universe is calling.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

SIMON: This is NPR News.

Same-sex relationships and the Episcopal Church - Faith in Memphis

This week, the 77th General Convention of The Episcopal Church commended and approved for provisional use ?Liturgical Resources I: I Will bless You and You Will Be a Blessing,? for study and use in dioceses and congregations of church.

Contained within Liturgical Resources I are liturgies for ?The Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant in a same-sex relationship,? specifically intended for the blessing of the monogamous lifelong relationships of same-sex couples.

The use of these liturgical resources is authorized for provisional use beginning the First Sunday of Advent 2012 (Dec. 2), under the direction of and subject to the permission of the Bishop exercising Ecclesiastical Authority in each Diocese.

It was not a surprise that this decision was made.

For over 40 years, The Episcopal Church has been grappling with issues related to human sexuality. This liturgical resource rose out of that conversation. It is not a compromise ?marriage rite,? but a pastoral accommodation intended to address the needs of a particular group that we in The Episcopal Church consider to be full members of Christ?s Church through Baptism and Grace.

I summarize The Episcopal Church?s decision to provide this liturgical resource for the blessing of these life-long covenants as follows:

The Episcopal Church sought ways to make a ?generous pastoral response? to our Christian gay and lesbian brothers and sisters seeking the Church?s blessing for their life-long, committed and monogamous relationships.

The Episcopal Church is responding now because a number of states have already approved marriage or civil unions between persons of the same sex. Until this current legislation, our Church did not have a liturgy to bless those relationships.

The Episcopal Church teaches that all baptized persons are full members of the Church. Therefore, as a matter of both Faith and witness, we choose to provide a prayerful framework within which we will order our common life around the blessings of these relationships.

This blessing liturgy is not required to be used by any clergy person. Clergy wishing to use it must have the specific permission of the local bishop. Most bishops allowing the blessing liturgy expect the lay and clergy leadership in a congregation to study the rationale behind the nature of the Church?s blessing and will require the leadership?s support for using the blessing liturgy locally.

This brief description of what our Church has done in providing this rite of blessing oversimplifies a complex and controversial issue. I am convinced that the decision was prayerfully reached. It seeks to bring order, honesty and hope to persons who have often been marginalized from full participation in the life of the Church.

This decision is consistent with the inclusive witness to Christ?s love that The Episcopal Church has made over the years. By it, we continue to proclaim that neither race, color, ethnic origin, national origin, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability or age will prohibit baptized persons from full participation in the life and witness of the Church.
Rev. Don E. Johnson is Episcopal Bishop of West Tennessee.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, Lily on Modern Family, Covers Adele's "Someone Like You"

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who plays Lily on Modern Family after producers decided to randomly morph the character from an infant to a five-year-old in between seasons, is apparently a big fan of Adele - and not a bad singer to boot!

Watch her belt out "Someone Like You," LIVE from the car seat:

Aubrey's mom, comedian Amy Anderson, filmed and posted the video.

She writes, "Aubrey is crazy into Adele right now which I love. It's so cute hearing her belt her songs in the car. This is where she likes to sing the most."

"At first she didn't know if she wanted to learn this particular song because she thought it was too slow, but now it's one of her favorites."

The youngest Modern Family cast member definitely holds her own.

Lockheed Martin F35 Lightning II stealth fighter cockpit demonstrator handson video

We spend hundreds of hours on board a variety of airplanes each year, most often en-route to a trade show or product launch event, but occasionally we have a rare opportunity to hop on board military aircraft, to test out unrelated products, or, even more unusually, to take a seat behind the yoke. Sadly that's not what we're doing today -- well, not exactly. We are taking a closer look at the F-35 fighter jet at Lockheed Martin's Fighter Demonstration Center just outside our nation's capital, but, being in the middle of a corporate complex, there's no actual Lightning II on hand. We were able to take a simulated ride, however -- this isn't your ordinary 4D sickness-inducing amusement park thrill. The F-35 is by far the most advanced Lockheed jet to date, with updated radar, all-internal weapons, improved tracking systems, 360-degree infrared coverage with a visor readout, and a full-stealth design, not to mention the incredibly capable glass cockpit powered by more than 9.3 million lines of software code, and an overall smoother experience for pilots that could end up spending shifts of 12 hours or longer in flight.

The F-35 has already seen plenty of field time in the US, with more than 500 flights already in 2012, and it's set to make its way to the UK armed forces next week and the Netherlands later this year, but while the aircraft is quite familiar to the pilots tasked with flying it, the public hasn't had an opportunity to experience Lockheed's latest airborne warrior. We flew a simulated mission within a grounded duplicate of the flyable F-35 cockpit, and the capabilities and improvements are quite clear -- you definitely don't want to encounter an F-35 from a previous-generation aircraft. The dual 8 x 10-inch touch-enabled displays combine to give you 8 x 20 inches of real estate, with dedicated modules for the weapons systems, targeting, and navigation easily accessible -- you can also move them to different panels depending on your current objective. A pair of joysticks at the left and right side provide direct access, letting you move a cursor to track enemy crafts or ground-based targets as well, and a very slick heads-up-display mounted in the helmet provides infrared mapping and instrument readouts. Overall, it seems to be an incredibly powerful system. Unfortunately, the mock-up on display here isn't accessible to the public, but you can join us for a behind-the-scenes look just after the break.

S. California, Sierra Nevada heat wave this week

LOS ANGELES -- Interior areas of Southern California and parts of the Sierra Nevada are in for high heat and increased fire danger this week, forecasters said Monday.

The National Weather Service said a strong, upper-level high centered over the Great Basin will bring triple-digit heat to the valleys and desert areas beginning Monday and peaking on Tuesday and Wednesday. Excessive heat warnings will be in effect most of Tuesday across the deserts, the NWS said.

Forecasters also warned that the heat, combined with very low humidity levels, will elevate the fire danger. Dry lightning will add to fire worries as a flow of monsoonal moisture arrives from the southeast later in the week, affecting Southern California and the southern Sierra Nevada.

In the Eastern Sierra, temperatures could top 100 degrees in the next few days, accompanied by strong winds and the chance of rainless thunderstorms as early as Tuesday, said state fire Battalion Chief Julie Hutchinson.

"We don't need lightning in that area," she said. "That could be a very bad thing."

Citing the critical fire weather and the dryness of vegetation, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection on Monday suspended burning permits and other uses of open fire on state responsibility lands in San Diego and Imperial counties. Use of campfires was restricted to established sites in campgrounds.

App uses Earth's magnetic field to guide you indoors

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

TimeWarnerCenterMagneticFields.jpg(Image: IndoorAtlas)

The?Earth's magnetic field once helped pioneering explorers discover exciting new lands and untold riches. Now, it could stop you getting lost at the shops, thanks to an upcoming smartphone app that uses magnetic fluctuations to map indoor locations, guiding you around places that GPS can't penetrate.

It has been developed by a company called IndoorAtlas, which was spun out of the University of Oulu in Finland by computer scientist Janne Haverinen and colleagues. In 2009 Haverinen told New Scientist how he built a robot that could navigate by magnetic fields after reading about a lobster with a similar ability. Now he's taking advantage of the digital compasses found in modern smartphones to do the same for people.

Compasses don't normally work inside buildings because metallic structures disturb the Earth's magnetic field, making it impossible to reliably find north, so IndoorAtlas takes a different approach by using these disturbances to create a unique map within each building. Map makers simply have to align their building's blueprint with a traditional map, then wander along designated paths with smartphone in hand to chart the magnetic variations.

Visitors to the building can then download the map to their own phone and navigate as normal, though users do have to travel a distance of 3-5 metres before the system locks on to their location. It might be worth the short wait though - unlike other proposed indoor navigations systems based on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, IndoorAtlas doesn't require any additional infrastructure, making it suitable for locations that suffer from radio interference while also reducing maintenance costs.

Federer a Grand Slam champion again at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Up in the players' box on Centre Court, Roger Federer's twin daughters squirmed, yawned, made funny faces and then applauded the new Wimbledon champion.

The girls turn 3 this month. They were 6 months old the last time Federer won a Grand Slam title.

"The victory today is a dream come true for me and my family, you know, seeing them there," he said. "It's big."

At 30, Federer showed the kids what he can do, and strengthened his contention he's far from finished. Federer ended a Grand Slam drought and equaled a Wimbledon record by winning the tournament for the seventh time Sunday, beating Andy Murray of Britain, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

For months Federer had been widely viewed as a champion in decline, eclipsed by Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Now he has won a 17th major title, padding his record, and he's back atop the ATP rankings for the first time since June 2010, matching Pete Sampras' record of 286 weeks at No. 1.

In less than three weeks, Federer will be back at Wimbledon trying to win his first Olympic singles gold medal. He'll be tough to beat in a setting where he plays his best tennis.

"I feel better here for some reason," he said. "I don't know why, but it's very unique and special in many ways."

He matched the record of seven Wimbledon titles set in the 1880s by William Renshaw and tied in 2000 by Federer's hero, Sampras. And while he ended his own 2?-year Grand Slam dry spell, he extended decades of frustration for the British, who haven't had a homegrown men's champion since 1936.

Murray, a Scotsman, was the first Brit to make the men's final since 1938. In anticipation of the match, fans camped out overnight in the rain just for a grounds pass so they could watch on a large video screen near the practice courts.

The Royal Box audience included British Prime Minister David Cameron, soccer star David Beckman and Prince William's wife, the former Kate Middleton. Murray tried to give them a good show, taking an early lead and then losing a close second set when he was broken in the final game.

The match began in sunshine, but rain interrupted play early in the third set, and the retractable roof was closed for a singles final for the first time since it was added in 2009.

And while Federer is good on grass, it turns out he's especially good indoors on grass.

"When the roof closed, he played unbelievable tennis," Murray said.

Federer agreed.

"I played terrific," he said.

Coming into the match, Federer had won 20 of his 74 titles indoors. With wind eliminated as a factor, he can swing even more aggressively and hit his pinpoint serves with even more accuracy.

That's what happened. A 26-point, 20-minute game in the third set proved pivotal and provided the match's most memorable moments. Murray fell to the grass three times during the game, but also saved five break points before he was finally broken to give Federer a 4-2 lead.

Federer held every service game the rest of the way. With the win, he became the first thirtysomething man to win Wimbledon since Arthur Ashe in 1975, and he reclaimed the No. 1 ranking from Djokovic.

Federer lost in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2010 and 2011, then blew a two-set lead against Djokovic in the U.S. Open semifinals last year, when he squandered two match points.

There was speculation that parenthood had cost him his edge, and that his best days were behind him.

"I understand everyone wants to be the first to have mentioned it or said it first that, 'OK, this is the decline,'" he said. "I see it more as a steppingstone, a period I have to go through. I knew how close I was for the last few years."

Now, with Federer's fortunes on the rebound, men's tennis remains compelling and competitive at the top. For the first time since 2005, the first three major tournaments have been won by three different players.

Djokovic won the Australian Open in January. Nadal won a record seventh French Open title last month.

And then there's Murray, now 0-4 in Grand Slam finals, with three of those losses to Federer. The only other man in the Open era to lose his first four major finals was Ivan Lendl, who happens to be Murray's coach.

Lendl went on to win eight Grand Slam titles. Murray believes he'll yet make a breakthrough, perhaps even at Wimbledon, where he became the first Brit to reach the men's finals since 1938.

"I'm getting closer," his told the crowd during the trophy ceremony, fighting back tears. He accepted a hug from Federer, and a moment later they were both laughing.

Federer then told the crowd he'll be rooting for Murray in the future.

"He'll at least win one Grand Slam," Federer said. "This is what I hope for Andy."

Now that his drought has ended, there might be more majors in Federer's future, too.

Internet Marketing 101: Tips That Will Get You Building Your ...

If regular emails to customers and potential customers are part of your Internet marketing strategy, make sure to rotate the links you include in your emails. If your links are the same in all of your email communications, your customers will ignore them and possibly send your messages to their spam filters. Add some variety to your emails!

The way your site looks is just as big a deal as it would be if your customers were in your physical store. Testing your links, images, ads and checkout process for errors can avoid upsetting visitors. Customers visiting a physical store will be irritated with breakdowns that slow down their shopping. At an online store, customers will have even less patience and are more likely to abandon their purchases if they encounter bugs.

Run a contest or special promotion to generate site traffic. You can try selling a special one dollar e-book for a limited time. When people come to your site to buy the e-book they are likely to take a look around and see what else you have to offer. Many times these visitors don?t just leave with the e-book, but with other products you sell.

If you intend for it to be a marketing tool, your website has to meet your customers? needs. Only having one web page that include the business hours and address really is not attractive to customers. When you add articles, reviews and informative content you will show your customers and potential customers you are a leader in the industry.

Stay informed with the various things on the Internet. The Internet is always changing quickly, so it is important to keep up with the popular sites and new innovations. Doing so can give you ideas for getting your product to your target market.

People will give you more respect if you use a proper title. Crown yourself CEO if you have a company. If you work for someone else, use your creativity and develop a title that creates a sense of power or authority. Always sign any emails and articles with your title and your name.

To gain potential customers, think of having a $1 promotional sale for new clients. These types of offers bring in new customers, increase traffic and improve sales. Visitors will often purchase items now, rather than waiting for a future window. Always have total confidence in the products that you sell!

Take a look at your site from the perspective of your customers. Is it easy to use? Is your content fun and interesting? Is an efficient and effective ordering system in place? All the SEO in the world will be pointless if your potential customers have trouble navigating your site once they get there.

Give away an exciting product that is emblazoned with your company name and site details. Allow it to be advertised for free on ancillary sites. For example, offer a free e-book and then submit it to different directories for e-books. Many web sites offer freebies like e-books for submission.

Offering guaranteed products and risk free purchases can help encourage people to buy from you. Customers need to know you will make an effort to to accept responsibility for your products or services that don?t work out for them. Customers are more likely to trust you with a guarantee.

Use image searches to your advantage when dealing with internet marketing. If you place relevant images on your site it can pique interest in what else your site has to offer. People looking for a certain photo might land on your site and get interested in what you are selling. They may come back another time if they like what they see, or even recommend your site to their friends.

Create a game to attract more site traffic. Customers tend to seek out free online games, and an uncomplicated game can induce them to become repeat visitors. You can even use the game as a subtle way to advertise your services. For example, create a game that allows players to style hair if what you?re selling are hair products.

Ask for feedback often. This is very important to your business, as your perception of your prices and your site?s appearance might differ from the customer?s opinion. Ask peers, family members and your potential clients for feedback. Consider their opinions, and make any changes you find reasonable.

With the ideas and inspiration you?ve just read, you should be feeling more confident in your ability to make things happen for your business. You can still hold true to your ideals, and enjoy what you do, but you will be making a profit at the end of the day.

Rain, rain go away: A London slog for Olympics?

(AP) ? After a sodden spring, is Britain heading for a summer washout?

It's lurched from the cold, wet drizzle that dampened the queen's Diamond Jubilee flotilla on the Thames to a sea of mud at the Isle of Wight music festival to frequent delays at Wimbledon, where even the retractable roof couldn't make the event all strawberries and cream.

And now that the country has recorded its wettest June on record, should Olympic officials be concerned? The games are just 21 days away.

"Oh, goodness! It's only a bit of British weather," said Charles Powell, a spokesman for the Met office, the national forecaster. "It's naturally variable."

Britain is an island nation, at the mercy of winds scooping up water from the Atlantic Ocean and breezes bringing in dry air from the European continent. There's a reason trench coats are classic here. This is a country that can have four seasons in an afternoon, where one should never leave home without both an umbrella and sunglasses.

In other words, if the weather is not to your liking, hang on, it will change. And if it doesn't, London Olympic organizers say they are ready for every eventuality.

"The main thing is that we are used to it and we have planned accordingly," said Debbie Jevans, director of sport for the games. "It is something that is a fact of life. That is why our country is so lovely and green."

There are five different sailing routes at Weymouth, on England's south coast, in case of poor weather. The BMX cycling track has a cover and improved drainage following lessons learned from downpours during a test event.

Care has also gone into drainage at the equestrian venue at London's Greenwich Park. This is likely to be extremely important ? several big British equestrian events, including the Badminton Horse Trials, were rained out this year because the ground was too sodden.

Plans have been drawn to make sure organizers and spectators get the most up-to-date information possible. Five Met Office forecasters will be embedded with the games and working around the clock, providing long- and short-range forecasts for the event, which starts July 27 and ends Aug. 12.

The sport most susceptible to rain is tennis, as any Wimbledon fan will tell you. Wet grass is problematic for players, who can easily slip and suffer injury ? so you can't just "keep calm and carry on" the way athletes can if they are playing, say, beach volleyball.

Some extreme weather patterns may cause some delays if the safety of athletes and spectators is endangered. That includes thunderstorms and lightning bolts ? as in the atmosphere, not the kind coming from the speedy shoes of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

Beyond that, the Olympics will go on.

That hasn't stopped bookmakers from going into overdrive over all the rain-soaked bets that can be placed. British bookmaker Ladbrokes has offered odds at 50-to-1 that it will rain every day at Olympic Stadium in east London. The odds are 25-to-1 that the weather causes the flame to go out during the opening ceremony and 500-to-1 that the person lighting the flame will be wearing an umbrella hat.

The only time rain is assured is during the opening ceremony. Director Danny Boyle has written it into his script and made provisions should the heavens not comply.

It's too early even for predictions, with the Met office saying it will have a good idea only five days before an event. London Games chair Sebastian Coe has proclaimed himself unconcerned, though he says he'll "have a flicker of nervousness about it" on July 27, the day of the opening ceremony.

Weather is a great unifying factor in Britain, where the BBC shipping forecast is a national tradition and where Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, won rave reviews for reading the weather report on TV during a visit to BBC studios in Glasgow, Scotland.

The sight of the heir to the British throne giving a credible performance as a weatherman prompted Britain's Sun newspaper to wonder if there was "any chance of reign?"

No matter what, the Brits will press on. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip have showed the way. During the Jubilee flotilla, they stood under an awning for hours, watching the parade through wind and rain as if it were blazing sunshine.

Beyond that, Olympic organizers are urging spectators to be prepared. Bring a hat. Bring an umbrella ? a small one because big ones are banned.

And take sunscreen. Because you never know.

117 ideas for how to make life better for young children and families ...

Gladys Richardson, a children?s advocate, sent me this list that she dug up from her files. It?s from a meeting on early care and education that she attended in Maine in 2002. In a 10-minute brainstorm, people came up with ideas for what they wanted life to be like for young children and families in 2202 ? 200 years in the future.

Here?s the list of 117 ideas. It strikes me that we have the smarts and technology to shorten that time frame a bit. How about in the next 5 years??

What do you think about these? If you?ve got more ideas, please add them in the comments. We?ll give them to the communities such as Tarpon Springs, FL, Port Townsend, WA, and Walla Walla, WA, to consider as they implement their plans to reduce and prevent adverse childhood experiences.

1)??? No more war.

2)??? Every child will have 10 adults who love them unconditionally for their whole life and they know it.

3)??? No child shall go hungry.

4)??? Early care and education is the most respected and highly paid profession.

5)??? Paid maternity and paternity leave for two years.

6)??? Every child is read to every day by a loving adult.

7)??? There are no financial constraints for families raising children anywhere.

8)??? Parents will be educated.

9)??? Each parent has the cultural and financial support to stay home full time for at least the first five years of their child?s life.

10)A safe environment where children are protected in homes and community.

11)Children and their families free from fear of violence.
