NASA's Curiosity rover has aced its first tests on Mars ? twist wheel to the left, twist wheel to the right, extend robotic arm, pull it back ? now it's heading out for a (nearly) 10-foot test drive.

NASA scientists successfully tested out Mars rover Curiosity's robotic arm. The arm could potentially drill into the Martian soil and collect samples.

That's the word from scientists and mission managers in summing up the rover's last few days on Mars.

The one exception to the string of good news is the loss of one of two wind sensors that form part of the rover's weather station. While not a showstopper, it could compromise the quality of some wind speed and direction measurements the station gathers, the team notes.

Despite the hitch, Curiosity and the operations team "continue to hit home runs here," said Michael Watkins, manager for the Mars Science Laboratory mission, of which Curiosity is the robotic star.

The rover is on a quest to help scientists determine if its landing site ? Gale Crater and the foothills of its central summit, Mt. Sharp ? might have once contained environments where life might have thrived.

Over the past few days, the rover has given its steerable corner wheels a twist to the left and a twist to the right to ensure that they function. It has extended its 7-foot-long arm out and back in, twisting its joints to make sure they all flex ? especially at the business end, where a small turret full of rock-sampling tools sits. And tomorrow it takes its first test drive ? all of about 10 feet ? where it will pivot in place and drive backward part of the way. From an engineering standpoint, that's what it's all about.

Images of the robotic arm's test taken by the rover's navigation camera atop its 7-foot-high mast are driving home that the rover isn't operating on a Jet Propulsion Laboratory test bed, Mr. Watkins says.

"We have looked at images like this so many thousands of times in our test environment," he says. Now, Mars is in the background of the images, rather than test-bed walls.

"It's really a great feeling," he said during a briefing Tuesday.

The rock-zapping ChemCam, also at Curiosity's masthead, conducted its first test on Sunday, revealing a 3-inch-wide target rock to be volcanic basalts, as the research team had anticipated. On Monday, they turned ChemCam's laser on a patch of Martian turf the team has named Goulburn.

It's one of four locations around Curiosity where the rocket motors from the rover's descent stage altered the surface. Goulburn is of special interest because the blast from the descent stage wiped the surface clean, exposing bedrock ? a tempting target for the mission's geologists.

Indeed, yesterday they followed up Sunday's highly successful ChemCam test with its first science assignment ? using its laser, mini-telescope, and spectrometers to analyze the chemical composition of the exposed bedrock. The results are pending.

Shares slip after Japan exports fall, euro steady

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares slipped on Wednesday as slumping Japanese exports reminded investors of the risks the euro zone debt crisis poses to regional economies, but the euro held steady on expectations the European Central Bank will act to rein in surging borrowing costs.

A rise in the CBOE Volatility Index <.vix>, a gauge of Wall Street's sensitivity to risk, and a pause in the recent run-up in U.S. Treasury yields, however, suggested investors were yet to be convinced that Europe's three-year crisis is close to resolution.

Japan's exports fell an annual 8.1 percent in July, the deepest drop in six months, dragged down by collapsing shipments to Europe and a sharp fall in sales to China. The fragile report from the world's third-biggest economy followed similarly bleak data from export-reliant South Korea and Taiwan.

Growth worries weighed on oil, with Brent little changed at $114.68 a barrel and U.S. crude also flat around $96.80. Copper shed 0.6 percent to $7,562.75 a tonne ahead of earnings from top global miner BHP Billiton , which may put three mega projects on hold on Wednesday when it will likely report its first annual profit fall in three years.

BHP will wrap up a torrid earnings season for the world's biggest miners, all battered by weaker prices for iron ore, copper, coal, nickel and aluminum as economic growth in big-buyer China slows to its weakest pace in a decade.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> fell 0.7 percent, led by more than 1 percent declines in both the energy <.miapjen00pus> and materials <.miapjmt00pus> sectors. Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> slid 0.9 percent as investors cashed in gains after a sharp run-up on mounting hopes for ECB action. <.t/>

"Economic data confirmed fundamentals are not strong, with a slowdown in China, which relies heavily on exports to Europe, having material effects elsewhere," said Takeo Okuhara, a fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments.

"The recent rally in riskier assets had been built on a lull in Europe, so they are ready to face a correction when hopes for something unrealistic fade," he said, referring to speculation that the ECB would buy bonds to cap the yields of troubled euro zone sovereigns.

Asian equities are not yet overbought, however, judging from the amount of net foreign buying, which stood at $8.1 billion so far in August, Credit Suisse said in a research note. Flows of foreign capital remain important direction-setters for many Asian markets.

Net foreign buying on a rolling 12-month basis is 0.6 percent of market capitalization, below the 1 percent level seen overbought, the Credit Suisse note said, while net foreign buying over two months stands at 0.26 percent, less than the 0.6 percent or more seen as overheated.

ECB SPECULATION DIES HARD

Speculation that the ECB will take a decisive step to cut borrowing costs for Spain and Italy gained further momentum with an article in London's Daily Telegraph, which said the ECB was examining plans to put a hard cap on Spanish and Italian yields.

A similar report on the ECB's bond-buying scheme in German media was on Monday denied by the bank, which also repeated its stance in response to the latest British report.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced support for the ECB's crisis-fighting strategy last week.

"The market rallied on growing convictions that Germany stands ready to do more to keep the euro zone united. Merkel's government seems more willing to ease the official debt burden on Greece, as long as the basic elements of the second bailout programme remain," Barclays Capital said in a research note.

The euro traded at $1.2465, not far from $1.2488 hit on Tuesday, its highest since July 5.

The dollar was down 0.1 percent against the yen at 79.22 yen, off a five-week high at 79.66 yen hit on Monday.

U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday as investors took profits after driving the Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx> to a four-year high, while European shares rose and yields in Spain and Italy fell further. Spain's 10-year debt yields have shed about 8 percent this month.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is holding bilateral talks with leaders of France, Germany and the Eurogroup this week to seek concessions for its austerity-to-bailout swap. His meeting with Merkel is set for Friday.

Spot gold steadied around $1,638.66 an ounce after hitting a 3-1/2 month high of $1,641.20 on Tuesday, while platinum also retreated from its highest since early May at $1,508.25 hit the previous session.

Asian credit markets were weaker, pushing the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by two basis points.

New biorefinery finds treasure in Starbucks' spent coffee grounds and stale bakery goods

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? With 1.3 billion tons of food trashed, dumped in landfills and otherwise wasted around the world every year, scientists have now described development and successful laboratory testing of a new "biorefinery" intended to change food waste into a key ingredient for making plastics, laundry detergents and scores of other everyday products.

Their report on a project launched in cooperation with the Starbucks restaurant chain ? concerned with sustainability and seeking a use for spent coffee grounds and stale bakery goods ? came on August 20 at the 244^th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia.

"Our new process addresses the food waste problem by turning Starbucks' trash into treasure -- detergent ingredients and bio-plastics that can be incorporated into other useful products," said Carol S. K. Lin, Ph.D., who led the research team. "The strategy reduces the environmental burden of food waste, produces a potential income from this waste and is a sustainable solution."

The idea took shape during a meeting last summer between representatives of the nonprofit organization called The Climate Group and Lin at her laboratory at the City University of Hong Kong. The Climate Group asked her about applying her transformative technology, called a biorefinery, to the wastes of one of its members -- Starbucks Hong Kong. To help jump-start the research, Starbucks Hong Kong donated a portion of the proceeds from each purchase of its "Care for Our Planet Cookies" gift set.

Lin's team already had experience in developing the technology needed to do it ? a so-called biorefinery. Just as oil refineries convert petroleum into fuels and ingredients for hundreds of consumer products, biorefineries convert corn, sugar cane and other plant-based material into a range of ingredients for bio-based fuels and other products.

"We are developing a new kind of biorefinery, a food biorefinery, and this concept could become very important in the future, as the world strives for greater sustainability," Lin explained. "Using corn and other food crops for bio-based fuels and other products may not be sustainable in the long-run. Concerns exist that this approach may increase food prices and contribute to food shortages in some areas of the world. Using waste food as the raw material in a biorefinery certainly would be an attractive alternative."

Lin described the food biorefinery process, which involves blending the baked goods with a mixture of fungi that excrete enzymes to break down carbohydrates in the food into simple sugars. The blend then goes into a fermenter, a vat where bacteria convert the sugars into succinic acid. Succinic acid topped a U.S. Department of Energy list of 12 key materials that could be produced from sugars and that could be used to make high-value products ? everything from laundry detergents to plastics to medicines.

In addition to providing a sustainable source of succinic acid, the new technology could have numerous environmental benefits, Lin explained. For example, Starbucks Hong Kong alone produces nearly 5,000 tons of used grounds and unconsumed waste bakery items every year. Currently, this waste is incinerated, composted or disposed of in landfills. Lin's process could convert these piles of foul-smelling waste into useful products, getting trash off the land. By avoiding incineration, fewer pollutants enter the atmosphere. In addition, the carbon dioxide that is produced is reused during the biorefining process. Because succinic acid and its products (such as bio-plastics) are made using bakery waste as a renewable feedstock, they are sustainable alternatives to products (such as regular plastics) that are now made with petroleum, a fossil fuel that is nonrenewable.

The method isn't just for bakery waste -- Lin has also successfully transformed food wastes from her university's cafeteria and other mixed food wastes into useful substances with the technology.

Lin said that the process could become commercially viable on a much larger scale with additional funding from investors. "In the meantime, our next step is to use funding we have from the Innovation and Technology Commission from the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to scale up the process," she said. "Also, other funding has been applied to test this idea in a pilot-scale plant in Germany."

The scientists acknowledged support from the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITS/323/11) in Hong Kong, as well as a grant from the City University of Hong Kong (Project No. 7200248).

Obama warns Syria of military ?red line? on chemical weapons

President Barack Obama warned Monday that he would consider military force if Syria's Bashar Assad either tries to relocate his regime's arsenal of chemical and biological weapons or attempts to use them on his own people in a bid to crush an uprising that could topple him from power. "I have, at this point, not ordered military engagement in the situation," Obama told reporters during a surprise question-and-answer session in the White House briefing room.

"We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation," he said.

Syria said in late July that it possessed chemical weapons and could use them to fend off any "external aggression" but not to crush rebels against Assad's rule.

"We're monitoring that situation very carefully. We have put together a range of contingency plans," Obama said. "That's an issue that doesn't just concern Syria. It concerns our close allies in the region, including Israel. It concerns us. We cannot have a situation where chemical or biological weapons are falling into the hands of the wrong people."

"We have communicated in no uncertain terms with every player in the region that that's a red line for us and that there would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front or the use of chemical weapons. That would change my calculations significantly."

A Safer Skateboard? This Inventor's Got It Handled

Kevin Rains isn't much of a skateboarder himself, but when he saw his son learning to snowboard, he realized that the skateboard business was in need of a product that makes it easier and safer for kids to learn.

After researching existing products and even registered patents, Rains, who was working in the mortgage business at the time, discovered there was nothing out there like what he had in mind. Rains envisioned a set of ?handles that would attach to the skateboard or snowboard with flexible tubing and allow the user to hold onto something while learning to maintain their balance.

His idea has a safety component, too. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children ages 0 to 4 years, older adolescents ages 15 to 19 years, and adults ages 65 years and older are most likely to sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI). In addition, almost half a million emergency room visits for TBI are made annually by children ages 0 to 14 years and falls cause half (50 percent) of those injuries.

Rains' product, which is called Krainkn, makes it easier for kids (and adults) to stand on and manipulate boards of all sorts while they get the hang of riding.

Getting the product off the drawing board and into production hasn't been easy. Rains built his first prototype with parts he purchased at the local Home Depot and Target. After he perfected his design, he used 3D printing technology to create an official prototype that could be used and thoroughly tested by kids at the local skate park. It was quickly clear Rains had a hit on his hands.

Now, Rains needs to get his product made. Having a mold created for mass production will cost about $6,000. To raise that money, plus what he'll need to produce the product and market it, Rains has turned to the crowd-funding site Kickstarter. His goal is to raise enough money to get the company off the ground by getting enough buyers to commit upfront. Those who commit to purchase a Krainkn product ? customers can buy just the handles or a skateboard that comes with the Krainkin handles already attached ? will be the first to get theirs when the products are made. (If Rains doesn't raise enough to meet his goal of $15,000, then no one's money will be taken and the products won't be sold that way.)

He'll be back to the drawing board looking for another way to finance his great idea.

I am very sorry to hear about you Leukemia.

Do not worry about elevated PAS levels. It is not necessarily always an indicator of prostatic cancer. The PSA levels essentially correlate with the mass (size) of the prostrate, and not exclusively cancer. It couldhigh because of infection or aging (my case).

?

A little background: I am 58 years of age. My father at 75 years of age and uncle at 68 years had prostate cancer. So I have at least one risk factor for prostrate cancer; it runs in the family.

?

Back in 2005, a routine PSA had me at 5.84,? I was referred to a urologist who did more total PSA testing. My total PSA shot up to more than 11 between 2005 to 2009. I had 3 transrectal biopsies, which turned up negative every time. To get a better assessment of the risks of cancer, my my urologist did Free PSA, in addition to the regular PSA test.

?

Base on these results, my urologist concluded that I have Benign Hyperplasia of the Prostrate (BHP). He put me on Avodart in 2009, which has dropped my my levels to below 0.2 with no side effects.? Hourrah! It apparently reduces the size of the prostate and my urologist/oncologist said that it also "helps" to delay or prevent prostate cancer.

?

By the way, earlier this year I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (diffuse large cell lymphoma), which is considered to be an agressive form of cancer. Treatments are going well and my prostrate is doing just fine.

?

In summary, total PSA is not a "buller proof" test for cancer. Your urologist should also do a FREE PSA to have a better idea. There is some debate amongst professionnals about the reliability of total PSA tests for cancer testing. Your urologist will also do a digital rectal examination (DRE) to determine of it is enlarged? or normal.

?

You will only get a confirmation by undergoing to a biopsy. Although it may be somewhat uncomfortable at first, overall the procedure is a piece of cake. Ask your urologist to freeze your prostate before taking the samples. It makes the test a lot easier; just like going to the dentist.

?

I hope this provides you some reassurance and comfort. You need not worry about these results but please do get it looked at. While it is fairly prevalent, prostate cancers are usually slow to develop and men usually die from other illnesses.

But perhaps more surprising is that Ryan loves to talk about his exercise, openly sharing about his passion for P90X and staying fit during interviews on the campaign trail. As a result, he?s become somewhat of a spokesperson for?P90X workouts, which has drawn much attention from Horton himself who?s now visited the Congressional gym several times to workout with Ryan and the Congressional team.

In a recent interview with TODAY, Horton pointed out that Ryan chooses P90X to stay in shape for the same reason millions of other Americans have: It works.

?It?s a combination of cardio and resistance and plyometrics and yoga,? Horton told TODAY. ?The idea is to avoid plateaus and injuries, and the things that keep you from sustaining your fitness.?

Despite Horton and Paul?s frequent appearances together at the Congressional gym, Horton himself was surprised that Ryan has spoken so openly about his extreme workout routine since joining the presidential campaign.

Ryan lost his father at an early age, and was just a teenager when he found his 55-year old father dead from a heart attack. This has been a trend in his family as both his grandfather and great grandfather died in their 50s due to similar conditions. This, coupled with a long-time love for sports and being active, gave Ryan incentive to stay in shape and share that passion with the people around him.

Now that Ryan?s on the campaign trail trying to rally votes for the upcoming election, he hasn?t slacked off on his workouts one bit. Rumor has it that he?s already been spotted in several hotel gyms early in the morning doing P90X routines on his iPad. Tensions high as Japan ministers visit war shrine

Two Japanese cabinet ministers visited a shrine honouring war criminals Wednesday on the anniversary of Tokyo's 1945 surrender, a move set to inflame feelings already running high over territorial spats.

The visits come as Japan is embroiled in a worsening dispute with South Korea over islands that lie half way between the two nations and as pro-Beijing activists attempt to land on another archipelago at the centre of a row.

Jin Matsubara, who handles the issue of Japanese kidnapped by North Korea, and land minister Yuichiro Hata went separately to Yasukuni Shrine, which honours 2.5 million war dead -- including 14 leading war criminals from World War II.

Visits to the shrine by government ministers spark outrage in China and on the Korean peninsula, where many feel Japan has failed to atone for its brutal expansionist adventurism in the first half of the 20th century.

In a speech underlining the historical hangover, South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak called on Japan to face up to responsibility for the women who were forced into sex slavery for Japanese soldiers during the war.

"It was a breach of women's rights committed during wartime as well as a violation of universal human rights and historic justice. We urge the Japanese government to take responsible measures in this regard," he said.

Around 500 South Koreans, including two former comfort women, rallied outside the Japanese embassy to stage their 1,035th weekly protest over the issue, which Tokyo insists was settled in a 1965 accord normalising relations.

Wednesday's protest came a day after Lee said Japan's Emperor Akihito would have to apologise for past excesses should he wish to visit South Korea.

Tokyo rounded on Lee, who had previously been viewed as a pragmatist with whom it could deal.

Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said his comments on the emperor -- a respected figurehead in Japan -- were "extremely regrettable".

"It is difficult to comprehend why President Lee made remarks like that yesterday," Gemba told reporters, adding Tokyo had lodged a protest through diplomatic channels.

The pilgrimages to Yasukuni were the first on the sensitive anniversary by any government minister since the centre-left Democratic Party of Japan came to power in 2009.

All three prime ministers since then have asked their cabinets to stay away.

At the shrine, Matsubara told reporters he was there "in a personal capacity" and had used his visit to "remember ancestors who established the foundations of the prosperity of present-day Japan".

Those enshrined at Yasukuni include General Hideki Tojo, the Japanese prime minister who ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor and was convicted of war crimes and hanged by a US-led tribunal.

Seoul had on Tuesday urged the ministers not to go to the shrine on the date it marks as Liberation Day, commemorating the end of Japan's often harsh colonial rule of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945.

Lee caught Tokyo off guard last week when he travelled to Seoul-controlled islands in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), known as Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japan.

Tokyo recalled its ambassador in protest and made noises about cancelling planned summits.

Separately, Japan is embroiled in a rumbling dispute with Beijing over islands in an area of the East China Sea believed to be rich in mineral deposits.

A group of pro-China activists from Hong Kong and Macau were reportedly near the disputed islands -- known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, where they claimed Japan's coastguard had fired water cannon at them.

Their voyage is aimed at pressing the Chinese claim to the uninhabited but strategically coveted archipelago.

Some 6,000 Japanese, led by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko as well as Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, offered silent prayers at noon for the war victims at a memorial ceremony in Tokyo.

Their speeches used tried and tested forumlae for regret, but avoided an explicit apology.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Samsung Electronics Co. is taking another shot at the dominance of Apple's iPad with a tablet equipped with a digital pen and a faster processor at the same price tag.

The Wi-Fi only version of the Galaxy Note 10.1 will go on sale in the U.S. on Thursday. The price starts at $499 for the basic model with 16 gigabytes of storage and $549 for the 32-gigabyte model, expandable with an external memory card.

Apple's latest iPad starts at the same price but the Note 10.1 offers some features that the iPad doesn't have, while its screen resolution is lower than the iPad's. It is Samsung's first Android tablet equipped with a digital pen and can run two applications side-by-side on a screen divided in half.

The split screen, made possible by the quad-core processor and 2 gigabytes of RAM, can be useful when taking notes while watching a video or surfing the Internet.

Analysts said this capability of the Note tablet is intended to attract business and education customers, a strategy that could be more effective than going all out against the iPad, which already dominates nearly 70 percent of the worldwide tablet market.

Samsung released about a half dozen Android tablets in the last two years under the Galaxy Tab series but none of them has been as popular as the iPad. Analysts say Android tablets are less successful because of a dearth of applications and higher prices.

But with the Note 10.1, the South Korean company believes it has a product that will find favor with corporations and schools despite the iPad's rich pool of applications and sharper screen.

While Apple makes one new model for the iPhone and iPad every year to meet demand from all around the world, Samsung releases multiple mobile products with variations in prices, screen sizes, hardware and operating systems.

This strategy helped Samsung edge pass Apple in smartphone sales but hasn't paid off in the tablet area, probably because Samsung's previous tablets were not differentiated enough from the iPad. Samsung's second-quarter market share in the global tablet market fell to 9 percent, while nearly seven out of 10 tablets in the market were emblazoned with Apple logo, according to IHS iSuppli.

Analysts say they see how multitasking, the note-taking feature and other tasks that can be done with the digital pen can help differentiate the Galaxy Note 10.1 from the iPad, something that may grab the attention of professional artists, educators and businesses if these features are executed smoothly.

"I think the video on the left and note-taking on the right half of the screen can be widely used for educational purposes," said Lee Sei-cheol, a technology analyst at Meritz Securities.

Samsung has improved the pressure-sensitive pen to make it feel more natural and accurate since the "S Pen" digital pen was first introduced with the Galaxy Note last year. The unexpected success of the 5.3-inch hybrid of a smartphone and a tablet emboldened Samsung to further explore the digital pen features.

There are also some 30 applications for sketching and note taking as well as Adobe Photoshop Touch and games where S Pen comes in handier than touching the screen. Samsung plans to expand the list of applications that support multitasking, which is currently limited to six, an official said.

Other features indicate that Samsung developed the products with the education and corporate markets in sight. Samsung also said it will donate nearly 600 Note tablets to eight South Korean schools for educational use. South Korea is rolling out a $2 billion project to replace paper books with digital texts.

Off to the side with our strength coaches, with [trainer] Eric Sugarman and his staff and our medical staff explained to myself and [G.M.] Rick Spielman that the next step for him in the process would be to get integrated with his teammates and that?s just what it means.? He?s done everything he can do on the side, now it?s the next step in the process.? It doesn?t mean in the future he?s going to be lining up with our team in the opening game, we don?t know that.? We have a long time to determine that, this is just another step in the process.?

Under the terms of the new CBA (which is being honored in most cities not located in Washington state), Peterson must complete a two-day acclimation period without pads.

?[T]oday along with Monday he can do some individual drills, he can do our walk through, but he can?t do any of the padded stuff that we?re doing and we?re in pads right now, so it won?t be until Tuesday when we can put him in pads and let him go through some of the padded work that we?ll do,? Frazier said.? ?We?ll just keep going through the process.?

Peterson, who won?t be exposed to fully live contact during practice (Frazier pointed out that Peterson never is), embraced the opportunity to get closer to playing.

?I asked him, because we?ve been talking about this for a while,? Frazier explained,? ?I said, ?Now is your chance to say Coach, I was wrong, I don?t think I?m ready.?? He said, ?I?m not saying that, I?m ready I can?t wait to get out there.?? He?s pretty excited.?

Frazier, who said Peterson did a good job of lobbying for the ability to return to action, wouldn?t say whether Peterson will play in the preseason.? Even if Peterson is able to suit up and go as of Week One, it doesn?t mean he?ll be the workhorse.? The Vikings could choose to go with Peterson and Toby Gerhart for most if not all of the year, given that it could take Peterson a full season to fully recover from his December 24 injury.
