Hylton banned for Shots

Danny Hylton completes his three-match suspension as Aldershot host Northampton.

The striker has already missed the games against Accrington and York and will be hoping the visit of Town goes ahead amid the current cold snap sweeping the country.

The Shots are due to face Middlesbrough at the Riverside in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday but Hylton would see his ban prolonged to take in the cup tie should Tuesday's clash fall victim of the weather.

Forward Dani Lopez sees his loan stay expire after the encounter against the Cobblers and he will return to Stevenage later this week unless an extension can be agreed.

Elsewhere, long-term absentees Craig Stanley (broken leg) and Olly Lancashire (abdomen) are not quite ready.

Northampton boss Aidy Boothroyd must decide whether to freshen up his team.

Boothroyd named an unchanged starting XI for the third straight match on Saturday and saw the Cobblers climb into the play-off places in npower League Two with a 1-0 home win over promotion rivals Burton.

David Artell is ready to make his long-awaited return. The experienced centre-back has made a complete recovery from the Achilles injury that has kept him out since the start of October but he was not included in the squad at the weekend.

Boothroyd could also call on the likes of Ishmel Demontagnac, Lewis Hornby, Lewis Wilson and Louis Moult should he wish to make changes.

Defender John Johnson, who has spent several weeks on the sidelines due to a knee injury, is close to returning to contention but will not be considered for selection.

Boothroyd will take a cautious approach with the full-back, who has had two knee operations this season and whose comeback from the first of those was aborted in November.

Nearly half of children under two years of age receive some vaccinations late

Jan. 21, 2013 ? In a new study published January 21 in JAMA Pediatrics, Kaiser Permanente researchers found that 49 percent of children ages 2-24 months did not receive all recommended vaccinations, or did not get vaccinated according to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices schedule.

Kaiser Permanente researchers used the Vaccine Safety Datalink -- a collaborative effort among the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and nine managed care organizations -- to analyze immunization records of 323,247 children born between 2004-2008. Data from immunization records helped illuminate the number of days each child was missing scheduled vaccines for any reason, including parents intentionally choosing not to vaccinate their children according to ACIP recommendations. Children who did not receive their vaccines on time were considered "undervaccinated."

"While a large majority of parents in the U.S. choose to vaccinate their children, a growing number of parents are concerned about vaccine safety and choose to vaccinate their children according to alternative immunization schedules," said lead study author Jason Glanz, PhD, a senior scientist at Kaiser Permanente's Institute for Health Research. "The medical community doesn't have a lot of data on these alternative schedules, so we are hoping the results from this study will open the door to more opportunities to examine their safety and efficacy."

The study found the number of undervaccinated children increased significantly during the study period, and 1 in 8 undervaccinated children's parents intentionally chose not to adhere to ACIP immunization guidelines. Alternative schedules either involve increasing the time between vaccinations or reducing the number of vaccinations in a single office visit, leaving children undervaccinated. Study findings also indicate undervaccinated children are less likely to visit their doctor's offices and more likely to be admitted to hospitals, compared to their peers vaccinated under the standard schedule.

See Jupiter and Moon shine dazzlingly close together Monday

Stargazers looking up as darkness falls on Monday will notice an eye catching pairing-off between two of the brightest objects in the nighttime sky, weather permitting.?

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. 'The Blob' boosts northern lights

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: "The Blob" from the sun has come and gone, sparking nothing more than beautiful views of the northern lights ? and there could be more blobs to come.

    2. Scientist proposes to girlfriend amid aurora
    3. NASA 'Mohawk Guy' to march in inaugural parade
    4. 'Planetary parks' could protect space wilderness

The moon, appearing as a waxing gibbous phase, 78 percent illuminated, will appear to stand close below a very bright, non-twinkling, silvery "star." But it won't be a star that will be keeping the moon company on America's Inauguration Night, but the largest planet in our solar system: Jupiter.

Across much of the United States and southern Canada, this will be closest that the moon and Jupiter will appear relative to each other until the year 2026. On Monday night, the moon will be about of 248,700 miles (400,500 kilometers) from Earth, while Jupiter will be nearly 1,664 times farther out in space at a distance of 413.8 million miles (665.9 million km).?

During Monday's stargazing event, observers have the chance to see what astronomers call an appulse ? a very close approach of the moon to Jupiter. An appulse is a phenomenon caused by perspective only. There is no close physical approach in space between the two objects involved.? Astronomers insist that appulses have no direct effect on the Earth.?

The moon, moving around the Earth in an easterly direction at roughly its own diameter each hour, will creep slowly toward and ultimately pass just below the giant planet. Jupiter, meanwhile, will be shining about three times brighter than the brightest star, Sirius, offering a commanding sight for stargazers despite its close proximity to the moon.

[ Amazing Stargazing Photos for January ]

Although it will be the moon that will be moving in Jupiter's general direction, the illusion will be that it is Jupiter that is moving, appearing to glide slowly along on a path taking it above the moon. A similar illusion occurs during a lunar eclipsewhen the dark shadow of Earth appears to be slowly creeping across the face of the moon. In reality it is the moon itself slowly creeping into the Earth's shadow.?

After their closest approach Monday, the moon will spend the balance of the night moving slowly away to the left (east), leaving Jupiter behind.??

The table accompanying this guide gives local times of Jupiter's closest approach to the moon's upper edge on the night of Jan. 21 for 20 major cities across the United States and Canada. Separation is given in terms of a fraction of an angular degree. The width of the moon is equal to one-half (0.50) of a degree.?

Examples: From Boston, closest approach between Jupiter and the moon is at 11 p.m. EST. Separation is 0.62 of a degree or one and a quarter times the apparent width of the moon from Jupiter to the moon?s upper edge. From Miami, closest approach is at 11:02 p.m. EST, the separation is listed as 0.33 of a degree or two-thirds of a moon's width separating Jupiter from the moon's upper edge.???

From Halifax, Nova Scotia, an asterisk indicates that the closest approach between Jupiter and the moon comes after midnight on Tuesday.?

And here?s another interesting illusion: For many places in the United States and Canada, Jupiter will be separated from the moon's upper rim by at least a half-degree (0.50) ? equal to the apparent width of the moon. And yet visually to the eye, Jupiter will appear to be much closer; in fact, seemingly impossible that the gap that separates Jupiter from the moon's edge would be large enough to accommodate an object that is equal to the size of the moon itself.?

[ How to Observe the Moon (Infographic) ]

Even from places like Boston, Montreal and Edmonton where the gap exceeds a half degree, Jupiter will appear much closer relative to the moon?s edge. Check it out for yourself.

If you own a small telescope, there are several stargazing opportunities to get a close look at Jupiter during Monday night's appearance.

According to Sky & Telescope magazine, Jupiter's Great Red Spot, a colossal storm bigger than the Earth, can be visible in amateur telescopes from 9 p.m. to 10:40 p.m. EST (6 p.m. to 7:40 p.m. PST/0100 to 0240 GMT). And Jupiter's icy moon Europa will cross in front of the planet, as seen from Earth, between 8:13 p.m. and 10:37 p.m. EST (5:13 p.m. and 7:37 p.m. PST/2213 and 2337 GMT). The best time for amateur astronomers to try and spot Europa's shadow on Jupiter via telescope will be between 10:22 p.m. and 12:46 a.m. EST (7:22 p.m. and 9:46 p.m. PST/0222 and 0546 GMT), the magazine's stargazing experts said.

"You'll also get an opportunity to attempt an unusual feat: spotting Jupiter in the late afternoon, before the Sun sets," said Tony Flanders, associate editor at Sky & Telescope magazine and host of Skyweek on PBS, in a statement. "First locate the moon medium-high in the east; then look a few moon-widths left or lower left of the Moon for Jupiter. It should be easy to spot with binoculars if the air is clear."

Lastly, if you are lucky to be situated across a broad swath of central South America including French Polynesia, Pitcairn and Galapagos Islands an even more spectacular event will take place, when the moon will hide or eclipse Jupiter (called an occultation).

But don't fret if you miss the moon's occultation of Jupiter Monday night. Another one will occur on March 17, according to Sky and Telescope.

Editor's note: If you snap an amazing photo of Jupiter and the moon, or any other night sky view, that you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery, send photos, comments and your name and location to managing editor Tariq Malik at spacephotos@space.com.

Can your boss fire you for expressing your opinion?

Is a human resources official, who voiced opinions about gays that contradict her employer?s views, protected from being fired by the First Amendment?

Courtroom,_United_States_CourthouseThat?s the issue that a circuit court had to decide in December after Crystal Dixon wrote a letter to the op-ed section of the Toledo Free Press.

At the time, Dixon was associate vice president for human resources at the University of Toledo.

?As a black woman who happens to be an alumnus of the University of Toledo?s Graduate School, an employee and business owner, I take great umbrage at the notion that those choosing the homosexual lifestyle are ?civil rights victims.? Here?s why. I cannot wake up tomorrow and not be a black woman ? Daily, thousands of homosexuals make a life decision to leave the gay lifestyle evidenced by the growing population of PFOX (Parents and Friends of Ex Gays) and Exodus International just to name a few,? she said.

Shortly thereafter, Dixon was fired from her job for expressing that opinion, even though she told the university that her personal views didn?t affect her job performance or prevent her from hiring openly gay employees.

Dixon sued the University of Toledo, a public institution, for retaliation in violation of her First Amendment rights. It is clear that she expressed an opinion. It is clear that the issue of civil rights and to whom they should extend is a matter of public concern.

It is also clear that in her position with the University of Toledo, she was responsible for implementing hiring and diversity policies.

How should the court decide this matter? Did the University violate Dixon?s right to freedom of speech as a private citizen expressing her opinion? Or did the University act correctly by terminating an employee who expressed an opinion that contradicts university policies, some of which were her direct responsibility to implement?

Asked another way, is the ?speech of a high-level Human Resources official who writes publicly against the very policies that her government employer charges her with creating, promoting, and enforcing? protected (Dixon v. Univ. of Toledo et al.)?

The court found that her speech is not protected by the First Amendment. Why? Because the court found that while she did not specifically state that gay students are not entitled to protection of the university?s diversity policies, she did express a belief that the status of homosexual individuals should not be considered a matter of civil rights, despite the fact that the university explicitly provides civil rights benefits through its policies.

By writing what she wrote, she expressly and publicly contradicted the policies that were her duty to administer. She was not, therefore, protected by the First Amendment. Do you think the Sixth Circuit decided the case correctly? Should her duty of loyalty trump her rights under the First Amendment? We?d love to hear your thoughts.

Peace and tranquility at Bath Rugby Club | Pitchcare Magazine

BathRugby RecreationGroundNightBruce Craig's plan is for Bath Rugby Club to have a new stadium befitting an Aviva Premiership side. Whether that is on the current site or 'out of town' is, as yet, unclear. As recently as the 2009-10 season, the ground capacity was increased to 11,700, so it would seem logical, to this outsider at least, to develop the Rec. Certainly, in financially difficult times, that route would have less impact on the club and, of equal importance, the shops, hotels, pubs and historic sites of this beautiful city, where travelling fans tend to 'make a weekend' of it. An out of town venue may seriously impact the city's income from its rugby club.

The city and the rugby club have been closely linked ever since 1894, when a lease was granted by Captain GW Forester to the Directors of The Bath and County Recreation Ground Company Limited. This lease allowed work to be carried out on the land which would make it "suitable for cricket matches, lawn tennis and archery tournaments, football matches and all other outdoor sports".

The first rugby match was played on the ground in that same year. Three years later, the ground hosted its maiden first-class cricket match, with Somerset County Cricket Club hosting the Gentlemen of Philadelphia as part of the Bath Cricket Festival. Somerset CCC still play one match a year at the Rec, although the weather put paid to this year's fixture.

BathRugby House&Gardens2Working alongside Bruce, himself a former England Students rugby player, is the club's Chief Executive Officer, Nick Blofeld, who was previously head of Epsom Racecourse. Between them, they have the drive and experience to achieve their goals. The first of these has almost been realised with the near completion of a brand new headquarters for the club at Farleigh House, which lies midway between Bath and Trowbridge in Wiltshire, but still within the Somerset border.

Farleigh House has a rich and interesting history. The current main house was completed in around 1820 for John Houlton, a wealthy Trowbridge clothier. Over the years, the house has served as a place of residence, a school and college and, more latterly, a place of work. Its most recent owners, global 'eyewear' company Inspecs, whose brands include French Connection, carried out major renovations to the estate, including the restoration of the gardens by David Reed, brother of the late actor, Oliver.

On 14th April 2010, a press conference was held announcing Bath Rugby's intention to create a dedicated training facility at the estate.

BathRugby LongBarnInterior2Since then, a lot of work has been carried out to meet the planning requirements needed to convert a listed building into an elite training headquarters.

Construction work has seen the conversion of the old chapel into a state of the art gym, whilst the outbuildings are being converted into the Long Barn, which will house changing and showering facilities, a strapping area, medical centre and rehabilitation space.

BathRugby LongBarnAlongside the building works, the club has had constructed two full size natural turf pitches and one half size 3G artificial. The natural turf pitches were the result of some cut and fill works, ameliorating the local soil with sand and installing a primary and secondary drainage with fully automated watering system. One pitch was seeded, whilst the other was turfed.

Bath Rugby's Head Groundsman is Darren Ball, who has been at the Rec since 2005. He was solely responsible for looking after both the Rec and their old training ground. However, with the building of the new training facility, and the fact that he cannot be in two places at the same time, the club has taken on Martin Hobbs as Darren's assistant. Between them, they will look after both sites.

BathRugby Darren&MartinMartin is no stranger to the club, having previously worked for Bath and North East Somerset Council at various parks, golf clubs and sports grounds, including the Rec. During his spell with the council, he gained qualifications in sports turf management.

The new training facility has required the purchase of a range of new machinery. For this, Darren has used his long time supplier and local John Deere dealers, BS Mowers. The equipment has been provided on a five year lease and service agreement with John Deere Financial, and includes two JD 2653B triplex utility mowers (one for each facility), a JD 3320 compact tractor, a JD HPX Gator 4x4 utility vehicle, a JD TC125 core collector, and two JD R54RKB walk-behind, rear roller rotary mowers. In addition, specialist Charterhouse equipment will be used on the artificial pitch.

The Gator, as well as being a general runabout and materials transporter, will also be used on the artificial pitch to tow the Charterhouse equipment. In addition, it can be fitted with a snow blade for clearing the approach roads and lanes surrounding the site, as and when necessary.

BathRugby TrainingPitchThe walk-behind rotaries are used for cutting out pitch lines and tidying up after practice, as well as for topping the pitches after reseeding.

The training pitches are cut 2-3 times a week, maintaining a height of cut at around 35mm, using the triple cylinder mower, and allowing the clippings to fly. Darren also implements a regular feeding and aeration programme to help keep the sward in good condition. A combination of granular and liquid feeds are applied to maintain colour and vigour.

The pitches are vertidrained on a monthly basis to keep them open and free draining.

Of the two pitches, the one that was seeded established really well, but the turfed one provided Darren with a few problems, which were not helped by the weather.

BathRugby KoroingAnother long time supplier, Ecosolve, whose skills Darren has been employing at the Recreation ground since he joined the club, were called in to carry out the remedial work.

This consisted of koroing off the top 27mm, followed by a pass with the Imants Shockwave. There then followed three passes with a First Products AeroVator to add cracks and fissures to loosen the surface to act as a key, and to stir the rootzone and fibres. Once that had been completed, 150 tonnes of topdressing were ameliorated in and the surface was bar graded.

The pitch was then refirmed using a lightweight roller, followed by the injection of 90 tonnes of drainage specification sand using a BLEC Sandmaster to create a tertiary drainage system that linked in with the existing primary and secondary ones.

Following the application of a pre-seed 6:9:6 fertiliser at 35gm/m?, the combination of a Vredo disc seeder and a BLEC Multiseeder 2 were used to apply Limagrain's MM60 grass seed at a rate of 42 grammes per square metre

BathRugby MowingPitchThe work was completed by 1st June, with the players able to train on the pitch by 1st September.

The grass pitches are marked out using a transfer wheel line marker, usually once or twice a week depending on weather and usage requirements. The 3G artificial has permanent lines, but needs brushing after training sessions to keep the pile standing up and redistribute the rubber crumb infill.

Darren has no need to worry about maintaining the gardens as the estate employs three full time gardeners, but there are times when they help each other out and share equipment.

As for the future, Bath are awaiting various approvals to modernise the Rec which, once given, would provide a new permanent stand, hospitality boxes, conference facilities, plus other potential retail outlets. There's even talk of a brand new, state of the art pitch!

BathRugby TrainingPitch3I would concur with Bruce that a well designed stadium would be a tremendous asset for the people of Bath. It would not only be a sports facility, it would offer other opportunities in terms of holding public events, conferences, concerts and many other viable services, especially if the council retained a partnership with the club. It would also continue the club's long association with the city centre retailers.

Darren has had to pinch himself at how far the club has progressed in recent years and, at Farleigh House, he and Martin are working at one of the most tranquil, unique and best equipped training facilities in Premiership rugby. Let's hope that the players respond, so that Bruce Craig's dream may be realised.

Pioneer HDJ-2000

The Pioneer HDJ-2000 is the flagship model of Pioneer's latest line of headphones for DJs. At $349 (list), it is significantly more expensive than the previously reviewed Pioneer HDJ-1500, and while it's sometimes difficult to justify the difference in cost between different models of the same line, in this case, it's plain to see why the HDJ-2000 is superior. While both headphone pairs offer quality audio performance, the HDJ-2000 is far more secure-fitting and comfortable, and is generally a victory of design in ways that its less expensive sibling is not.

Design
Available in black-and-chrome, matte white, or silver, the HDJ-2000 gets so many things right with its design, but the primary asset here is the aforementioned comfort. The ear pads and the underside of the headband are plush, and things never get uncomfortable, even during long listening periods. The visual design scheme of the HDJ-2000 is also well thought-out. There are no flashy, garish design elements, just a simple classic look that also happens to be well-constructed.

Part of the reason the headphones fit so well is the headband's design?you can easily lock it in place on both sides, ensuring the length of the headband stays how you want it. The HDJ-2000 folds down into a more compact size, as well, and there are swinging joints directly above each ear cup, making it easy to move an ear cup off of one ear.Pioneer HDJ-2000 inline

The Stereo/Mono switch on the left ear cup is exceptionally useful?if you have a song with lots of content panned hard left or right, it's possible you'd miss your cue if one ear cup was flipped away. Switching to mono for these circumstances ensures each ear will hear the same content.

The cable is detachable and is wound in a thick, expandable coil, with a connection point at the ear cup that is not a typical 3.5mm connection, but a three-prong one instead. It's debatable whether this connection may deliver a more solid lock or superior audio quality, but it definitely means you'll have to buy replacement cables directly from Pioneer?here's hoping they're still making this non-standard design cable if and when you need it. The cable terminates in a 3.5mm connection, but the headphones ship with a screw-on ?-inch adapter for larger headphone jacks.

The only other accessory the HDJ-2000 ships with is a black, drawstring pouch that the headphones fold down into easily.

Performance
The HDJ-2000 passes the most important of tests for DJ headphones with ease: It does not distort at top volumes. Even at maximum, unsafe listening levels on tracks with challenging deep bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the HDJ-200 delivers clean audio. Its bass response is comparable to that of the HDJ-1500, but of course this requires first that you get a secure fit on the loose-feeling HDJ-1500?the HDJ 2000 fits snugly and comfortably the first time and requires little adjustment, thus ensuring more consistent bass response, as well as more consistent ear-to-ear performance.

On classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the HDJ-2000 provides a refined bass response, lending the lower register strings and percussion a pleasant richness, but never going overboard. The higher register strings and brass have a nice high-mid frequency growl to them, and the high frequency woodblock hits sit nicely at the top of the mix without ever getting too bright. Things never sound muddy, nor harsh?the HDJ-2000, like the HDJ-1500, provides a nice sense of low-end and crispness simultaneously.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," the kick drum loop's attack is delivered with a crisp treble edge, as well, and plenty of low frequency thump. The underlying sub-bass synth hits are reproduced with slightly less boost than you hear on various models from Beats by Dr. Dre, but the sound is in no way anemic. The vocals are delivered with a nice edge, as well, helping them stand out over the dense mix.?

If the HDJ-2000 lacks anything, it's bells and whistles. That's probably a good thing for a pair headphones that should be thought of as more of a tool, but it's worth pointing out that the Panasonic Technics RP-DH1250?comes with two removable cables, not just one, and one of them has built-in iOS device controls, so it can double as your mobile headphone pair. Compared to the Technics RP-DH1250, the HDJ-2000 delivers a slightly less bright response, with a less crisp high-mid delivery and a bit more power in the bass department.

Meanwhile, the Beats Pro by Dr. Dre?has a bit more deep bass presence than the HDJ-2000, as well as the ability to plug the cable into either earcup. The less-expensive Numark Electrowave may not look as refined or snazzy as these models, but it offers solid audio performance and a comfortable secure fit. For the money, however, the HDJ-2000 is a strong investment?its fit is unsurpassed amongst the models we've tested, and it offers accurate, robust audio for DJs who need to hear every part of the frequency range.

Couldn't really come up with a good theme for this week's Windows Phone Central Roundup so I decided to pick a few games from the New+Rising list over at the Windows Phone Store.

No rhyme or reason as to which titles made it to the roundup and if you've stumbled across a new Windows Phone game you'd like to recommend, sound off in the comments.

PenguinAirborne

PenguinAirborne (free): PenguinAirborne is a racing game of sorts that involves skydiving. You compete against four other penguins to see can reach the ground the quickest without going splat.

As you fall, you can tilt your Windows Phone left or right to try to catch bonus items as you plummet to earth. Last to hit the ground gets a bomb dropped on them, ending the game for that penguin. Survive all five rounds, you get promoted and move on to the next level.

PenguinAirborne isn't a feature rich game but it's still a nice way to pass the time with. PenguinAirborn is a free, ad supported game for your Windows Phone that you can land here in the Windows Phone Store.

Egg Man Rally

Egg Man Rally (trial/$.99): Egg Man Rally is a Windows Phone game that will test your speed and balance. You are racing a buggy across a hilly course, maintaining balance and avoid bouncing your egg out of the buggy. Balance is maintained by forward and reverse, on-screen controls.

You can modify your buggy suspension and weight balance to better the odds. The game spans race courses in eight Countries and each Country has six courses. Egg Man Rally also has online leaderboards through Scoreloop.

Again, not many features to this game but Egg Man Rally has nice graphics, fun game play, challenging physics and is nice addition to the Windows Phone gaming library.

There is a trial version available with the full version of Egg Man Rally running $.99. You can find Egg Man Rally here at the Windows Phone Store.

Fingerball Free

Fingerball Free (free): Fingerball wasn't exactly what I expected but it's ends up being a simple game that has an odd addictive quality to it. Gameplay is about as simple as it can get. Tap the ball to bounce it in the air and keep tapping it to keep it airborne. If the ball hits the ground, game over.

There are six different scenes to compete in and six different difficulty levels (harder the difficulty, the smaller the ball). Each tap earns you a point and naturally you try to earn as many points as possible. ?The game sounds easy but it's more challenging than you would think.

Fingerball has online leaderboards and if you achieve the high score, you'll earn a champions cup. When someone tops your score, you lose the cup.

Fingerball is a free, ad-supported game that you can find here at the Windows Phone Store.

Sparks

Sparks (free): Sparks is an interesting puzzle type game for your Windows Phone where you have to guide a light through a maze of tunnels while avoiding various enemies. Along the way your light or spark needs to light torches (black little lighthouses scattered about) and can collect floating shards to regain health.

A virtual joystick in the bottom left of the screen is used to guide your light. A combat joystick sits in the bottom right to give your light a burst of speed to destroy your enemies.?Sparks is a minimalistic type of game that has it's fair share of challenges. It is a multi-level game and not a bad way to pass the time with.

Sparks is a free, ad-supported game that you can find here at the Windows Phone Store.

Obsessive Collecting Disorder

Obsessive Collecting Disorder (free): Obsessive Collecting Disorder is a multi-level platform game for your Windows Phone. You have to guide your character through a maze of dangers, collecting coins along the way. Collect all the coins and you're transported to the next, more challenging level.

Left and right movement is controlled by tilting your Windows Phone. The more you tilt, the faster the little stick figure goes. When you're ready to jump, just tap the screen.

Obsessive Collecting Disorder has seventy levels spread across seven stages. The only downside to this is that if you leave the game, you have to start each Stage at the first level. Some of the levels can be tough so it sucks to have to replay them instead of resuming where you left off at. ?It reminds me a little of Shift 2 but will less of a puzzle solving element.

Obsessive Collecting Disorder is a free, ad-supported game and you can find it here in the Windows Phone Store.

Again, no rhyme or reason behind selecting these games from the New and Rising section of the Windows Phone Store. I did begin to try Trick Shot Bowling, which looks like an interesting game, but it kept crashing right after the start screen.

Of the bunch, Egg Man Rally was the most enjoyable but each game wouldn't be a bad way to pass the time with. If you've spotted a New+Rising game that you would recommend, jump on board and speak up in the comments.

Walmart apologizes after breast cancer survivor humiliated - WXIX

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Walmart has issued an apology after a breast cancer survivor said she felt compelled to show her mastectomy scar to be able to return a $13 book.

The woman, who KCTV5 is not identifying, said she received the book as a Christmas gift for her son.

"We didn't have a receipt. It was a gift," she said.

The woman, who underwent chemotherapy, went to a Northland Walmart off Barry Road to exchange the item. But she never imagined the scrutiny she would face in trying to make a simple exchange.

She was asked to produce a photo identification, which she readily did so, saying she knows they have to keep records to prevent fraud. But several employees didn't believe it was her because her long, blonde hair is now short and brown. Her facial features are the same, but chemotherapy ravaged her hair.

"Instead of looking at facial features, she said, 'Oh, your hair is not blonde anymore.' I had on a hat. I said, 'I lost it. It's growing back,'" the woman recalled. "She kind of frowned at me. I said, 'Honestly, it's personal but I have cancer. That's why my hair looks different.' And she kind of rolled her eyes at me and kind of snapped her fingers for her manager to come over."

She said three employees, including a manager, scrutinized her identification for what felt like an uncomfortably long period of time.

She said she offered to show them her scars.

"They were rude to me. So I finally pulled down the top of my shirt and showed them I still have the scar," she recalled. "They were kind of shocked. I said, 'I have breast cancer. I'm not going to show you another scar.'"

Walmart officials said they have reached out to store management to discuss ways to handle such cases differently.

"We truly apologize to the customer for her experience," the company said in a statement.

The woman did receive a gift card for the returned book and she hopes others will be more compassionate.

"I don't go around telling everyone and frankly it wasn't any of their business," she said. "But I just wanted to get the situation over with."

93% Zero Dark Thirty

All Critics (186) | Top Critics (42) | Fresh (173) | Rotten (13)

Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within.

No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter.

While "Zero Dark Thirty" may offer political and moral arguing points aplenty, as well as vicarious thrills,as a film it's simply too much of a passable thing.

From the very first scenes of Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates why she is such a formidable filmmaker, as adept with human emotion as with visceral, pulse-quickening action.

A timely and important reminder of the agonizing human price of zealotry.

Not only is Zero Dark Thirty one of the year's best movies, it's an inspiring one to share with your daughters. That is, if they're old enough to deal with explicit torture scenes.

It is played out in a matter-of-fact way, like a documentary. Step by step we follow the evidence with Maya as she doggedly pursues Osama Bin Laden for more than a decade.

With a little editing and some greater humanity infused into it, this could have been brilliant. 'Zero Dark Thirty' is solid and good overall, but not great. (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

I'd call it efficient. I would not call it inspired, groundbreaking, brilliant, innovative -- or even particularly effective as drama.

The fact that commentators, pundits, and politicians on both sides of the political spectrum are condemning Zero Dark Thirty is a sure sign that director Kathryn Bigelow and journalist-turned-screenwriter Mark Boal have done something right.

What makes Zero Dark Thirty such a fascinating film is that it plays both as an engaging procedural thriller and a serious examination of the country's moral compass. It is already doing what great movies do-starting conversation.

It asks its audience: When does the risk of doing something outweigh the risk not doing anything? What are the costs of revenge? Where will the "war on terror" take us next?

Zero Dark Thirty is the perfection The Hurt Locker promised.

Zero Dark Thirty is a model of artistic restraint, a film letting fantastic history trump the need to score partisan points.

An effective and expertly made film, but a more character-driven story would've added some flesh to the bones of a great, true story.

It's particularly comparable to Zodiac, while there are also obvious parallels to Homeland, and a riveting, Call Of Duty-type finale.

This is an instant classic.

Zero Dark Thirty is a gripping, authentic-feeling account of the dark side of the war on terror.

Chastain's Maya is a red-tressed Pre-Raphaelite madonna with the cleft chin and chiseled features of an action hero.

After the lengthy torture scenes, procedural repetition takes over until the murkily-filmed Seal Team 6 raid. But Jessica Chastain is quite convincing as a CIA operative dedicated to her job.

A well-acted, well-intentioned, disjointed mess.

A well-produced and well-acted procedural/thriller film that stays focused on the frustrating nuts and bolts CIA led search for the elusive Al Qaeda leader.

A gripping, almost necessary, piece of filmmaking.

The picture acknowledges the very real presence of torture on the post-9/11 landscape -- had the filmmakers ignored the subject, the movie would be little more than vile, jingoistic nonsense.

(Jessica) Chastain's powerful performance, for which she deserves a best actress Academy Award, drives the film. She has no private life, no friends. Her obsession drives her.

"We always get our man, eventually."

Democrats Vote to Exclude Non-Union Construction Workers for Hurricane Sandy Work

Profiting on Disaster: NJ Senate Votes To Exclude Non-Union Construction Workers For Hurricane Sandy Work

By: LaborUnionReport (Diary)?

A bill that was authored by an Ironworkers? union organizer to expand union-only Project Labor Agreements?to include Hurricane Sandy cleanup and reconstruction?passed the New Jersey Senate on Monday along party lines 23-13.

The Ironworkers? union organizer who drafted the pro-union bill, Steven Sweeney, also happens to be the president of the New Jersey Senate and recently accused New Jersey Governor Chris Christie of ?praying? for Hurricane Sandy to hit New Jersey.

As it turns out, though, unions must be counting their blessing with the New Jersey?s Senate passage of S. 2425 which adds adds to an already-existing discriminatory PLA laws in New Jersey:

??? New Jersey has had a project labor agreement law on the books since 2002, but highways, bridges, pumping stations and water and sewage treatment plants were exempted. With extensive rebuilding needed on those structures along the shore, this bill includes them.

??? Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester), who authored the legislation and fast tracked it, said the agreements are key to making sure work goes to New Jersey workers. [Emphasis added.]

A Project Labor Agreement, according to the bill, ?means a form of pre-hire collective bargaining agreement covering terms and conditions of a specific project.?

In other words, non-union construction workers are not welcome.

BKN-KNICKS-PISTONS

Knicks win in London, beat Pistons 102-87

LONDON (AP) -- Carmelo Anthony returned to his Olympic gold medal past and scored 26 points Thursday to lead the New York Knicks to a 102-87 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Anthony scored 18 in the first half as the Knicks jumped out to a 16-2 lead before holding a double-digit lead for most of the game.

Amare Stoudemire added 17 points for the Knicks and J.R. Smith scored 16. Will Bynum led the Pistons with 22 points.

The Pistons were the home team at the O2 Arena in London, the site of the Olympic gold-medal game during last year's London Games. It was the third regular-season NBA game played at the venue, where the then-New Jersey Nets swept the Toronto Raptors in a pair of games two years ago.

RANGERS-PREVIEW

Rangers LW Nash not feeling heat of NY spotlight

NEW YORK (AP) -- If going from being a Columbus Blue Jacket to a Broadway Blueshirt carries a whole lot of pressure, Rick Nash isn't feeling it on his broad shoulders.

Welcome to New York, Rick. You're not in Ohio anymore.

The long sought-after Nash finally was corralled by the Rangers in a big offseason trade. New York is coming off a season in which it finished first in the Eastern Conference, but the Rangers fell short of the Stanley Cup finals with a conference finals loss to the rival New Jersey Devils.

Expectations were already high for this season that will finally get going Saturday night when the Rangers visit the Bruins in Boston.

Throw the 6-foot-4 Nash into a forward mix that also features high-scorers Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards, and it's hard not to view the Rangers as being as serious a Stanley Cup threat as there is out there.

RANGERS-REDDEN BUYOUT

Rangers buy out last 2 seasons of D Redden's deal

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Rangers are buying out the final two seasons of disappointing defenseman Wade Redden's contract.

The Rangers made the move Thursday, one day after placing Redden on waivers. Now the 35-year-old Redden is an unrestricted free agent.

Redden has spent the past two seasons with Connecticut of the AHL after notching five goals and 35 assists in 156 regular-season games with the Rangers over two seasons after he signed a six-year, $39 million free-agent deal to leave Ottawa.

The accelerated compliance buyout, approved in the new labor deal, means Redden will earn a pro-rated $3.341 million for this season plus two-thirds of the $5 million he was set to earn next season.

In 994 career NHL games, the 35-year-old Redden has 106 goals and 344 assists.

DEVILS-PREVIEW

Devils have doubters coming off Stanley Cup run

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Reaching the Stanley Cup finals hasn't made the New Jersey Devils one of the favorites to win the NHL title in this lockout-shortened season.

Far from it.

Despite returning Ilya Kovalchuk, Martin Brodeur and almost everyone from the club that came within two games of winning its fourth Cup, the Devils have a lot of doubters heading into the 48-game regular season.

A big part of the concern is the loss of former captain Zach Parise. A 31-goal scorer last year, he returned home by signing with Minnesota as a free agent.

Not only did general manager Lou Lamoriello lose a face of the franchise, he also decided not to re-sign veteran Petr Sykora, a 21-goal scorer, and faces the prospect of starting without second-year center Adam Henrique (16 goals), who is sidelined with a thumb injury.

Indeed, the Devils have a mountain to climb in the tough Eastern Conference if they are to repeat last season's success.

DEVILS-CAPTAIN

Devils name defenseman Bryce Salvador captain

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Defenseman Bryce Salvador has been named the captain of the New Jersey Devils.

Coach Pete DeBoer announced the appointment after practice on Thursday, adding that Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk will remain the alternate captains.

Salvador replaces Zach Parise, who signed with Minnesota as a free agent after last season.

Salvador, who signed a three-year, $9.5 million pact in July, had four goals and 14 points in the postseason after a regular season in which he failed to find the net once. He teamed up with Marek Zidlicky to form the Devils' top defensive pairing.

Salvador played all 82 regular-season games for the Devils last season, a year after missing the entire season with a rare, inner-ear concussion.

ISLANDERS-PREVIEW

DiPietro, Islanders look for bounceback season

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- Rick DiPietro knows all about being kept away from the hockey rink when he wished he could play.

Injuries upon injuries have sidelined the man who should have been the New York Islanders' franchise player but instead became the punch line for the club that has struggled to stay relevant in the NHL.

But DiPietro is back with the Islanders, ready to get back on the ice for the 48-game sprint of a season that will begin Saturday night at home against the defending Eastern Conference champion New Jersey Devils.

If DiPietro's health can come anywhere close to matching his enthusiasm, the Islanders could have quite a solid veteran goaltending tandem of Evgeni Nabokov and the 31-year-old DiPietro.

SABRES-PREVIEW

Expectations high for Sabres to deliver winner

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Sabres general manager Darcy Regier requires no further reminder of how much support the team still has in Buffalo after seeing more than 10,000 fans attend a scrimmage this week.

It's not lost on Regier that the turnout is also a reminder of how high the expectations remain for him and the Sabres to finally deliver a winner.

That, Regier says, is the plan. And he's confident the objective will be met this season.

A year after the high-priced Sabres (39-32-11) were among the NHL's biggest busts by missing the playoffs entirely, they have plenty of unfinished business to take care of in proving they can be contenders.

The opportunity to start putting last year's frustrations behind them begins Sunday, when Buffalo opens the regular season hosting Philadelphia.

SABRES-MOVES

Sabres place 3 on waivers, including D Pardy

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- A person familiar with the moves has told The Associated Press that the Buffalo Sabres have placed three players on waivers, including defenseman Adam Pardy.

The Sabres, on Thursday, also placed minor league forwards Nick Tarnasky and Kevin Porter on waivers, the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the moves.

Pardy is a three-year NHL veteran who was acquired along with center Steve Ott in a trade in which the Sabres dealt Derek Roy to Dallas in July. NHL teams had until noon Thursday to place players on the 24-hour waiver list before they can set their 23-man regular-season rosters on Friday.

If the players go unclaimed, they will be re-assigned to the minors.

Pardy's pending departure leaves Buffalo with eight defenseman.

YANKEES-CHAMBERLAIN

Joba Chamberlain, Yankees agree at $1,875,000

NEW YORK (AP) -- Reliever Joba Chamberlain and the New York Yankees have agreed to a one-year contract worth $1,875,000, avoiding salary arbitration.

Chamberlain returned Aug. 1 after being sidelined for 14 months by elbow and ankle injuries. The 27-year-old right-hander went 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA in 22 games, striking out 22 in 20 2-3 innings.

His deal, which is not guaranteed, contains performance bonuses for games finished.

Two Yankees remain in arbitration: right-hander David Robertson and left-hander Boone Logan.

New York's projected payroll is at about $200 million for 16 players, including $8.5 million the Yankees are paying Pittsburgh as part of last year's trade that sent A.J. Burnett to the Pirates.

YANKEES-RODRIGUEZ SURGERY

AP source: A-Rod cartilage damage minimal

NEW YORK (AP) -- A person familiar with the diagnosis says Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was found to have relatively minimal cartilage damage in his left hip during surgery this week.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the team did not make that detail public.

Dr. Bryan Kelly of the Hospital for Special Surgery, who operated on A-Rod on Wednesday, said last week the extent of cartilage damage was a concern and could not be determined before the operation.

Kelly repaired a torn labrum and reshaped the bone to alleviate impingement. The Yankees said Wednesday the operation "went as planned and without complication."

New York said recovery time is six months, a timetable that projects Rodriguez to return after the All-Star break.

METS-PARNELL

Mets, Parnell avoid arbitration with $1.7M deal

NEW YORK (AP) -- Relief pitcher Bobby Parnell and the New York Mets have avoided salary arbitration, agreeing to a one-year contract worth $1.7 million.

The deal was completed Thursday.

Parnell has been a key member of New York's bullpen the past few years. He led the team with 74 appearances last season, going 5-4 with a 2.49 ERA and seven saves. The hard-throwing righty had 61 strikeouts and 20 walks in 68 2-3 innings.

Parnell made $504,000 last season, when he fell just short in service time of being eligible for arbitration. He's been effective as a setup man, but hasn't been able to lock down the closer job despite several opportunities with the Mets.

A pair of New York players remain in arbitration: first baseman Ike Davis and second baseman Daniel Murphy.

JETS-GM SEARCH

Jets appear close to hiring new GM

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Jets are closing in on hiring a general manager, with Seattle executive John Idzik the apparent front-runner.

The Jets, who fired Mike Tannenbaum on Dec. 31, have held a thorough interview process with the help of a search firm with about 10 candidates. ESPN, citing anonymous sources, reports that the Jets are close Thursday night to offering the job to Idzik, the Seahawks' vice president of football administration.

Idzik and Pittsburgh executive Omar Khan are among the finalists being considered by owner Woody Johnson and team president Neil Glat.

Idzik, whose strengths include managing salaries and the salary cap but has also worked in player personnel, has been with the Seahawks the past six seasons after previously working in the front office for Tampa Bay and Arizona.

BILLS-COACHES

Bills hire 3 more assistants, including Hilliard

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Doug Marrone has hired three more assistants to his new Buffalo Bills staff, including Ike Hilliard taking over as receivers coach.

Hilliard comes to Buffalo after spending the past two seasons coaching receivers with the Washington Redskins. He's a former NFL receiver who split 12 seasons between the New York Giants and Tampa Bay.

The Bills also hired John Anselmo to work as a special teams assistant. He previously worked under Marrone at Syracuse.

Hal Luther, also from Syracuse, was hired as assistant strength and conditioning coach.

The team announced Thursday that offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will also double as quarterbacks coach.

Including Hackett, the Bills staff now features seven of Marrone's former assistants at Syracuse, where he went 25-25 over four seasons.

BKN-ALL-STAR-STARTERS

Bryant gets record 15th straight All-Star start

NEW YORK (AP) -- Kobe Bryant has been voted to his NBA-record 15th consecutive All-Star start, leading four Los Angeles players into next month's game.

Lakers teammate Dwight Howard and the Clippers' Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will join Bryant in the Western Conference lineup for the Feb. 17 game in Houston. Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, the MVP of last year's game, rounds out the five.

Kevin Garnett held off Chris Bosh in fan balloting, giving the East two Boston Celtics and two Miami Heat players. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade will represent the defending champions and receive passes from Rajon Rondo. New York's Carmelo Anthony is the other starter.

Bryant finished with 1,591,437 votes, edging James by about 7,800 to finish as the leading vote-getter and break a tie with Shaquille O'Neal, Jerry West and Karl Malone for the most consecutive starting nods.

SYRACUSE-ANTHONY

Syracuse to retire Carmelo Anthony's jersey

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Syracuse is retiring the jersey of former star Carmelo Anthony when the Orange host Georgetown at the Carrier Dome in February.

A large replica of Anthony's jersey will be unveiled in the rafters of the Dome alongside nine other previously retired uniforms. Anthony, now a star for the New York Knicks, will be presented a framed jersey during a halftime celebration.

Syracuse won the national championship in 2003 behind Anthony, who led the Orange in scoring (22.2) and rebounding (10). He capped his only season in college by being named the Final Four's most outstanding player after leading the Orange past Texas in the semifinals and Kansas in the title game in New Orleans.

Anthony's jersey will join those of Dave Bing, Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglas, Billy Gabor, Vic Hanson, Billy Owens, Wilmeth Sadat-Singh, Rony Seikaly, and Dwayne "Pearl" Washington.

PENN-NJIT

Penn nips NJIT 54-53, ends 8-game skid

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Patrick Lucas-Perry came off the bench to hit a late 3-pointer and two free throws, and Pennsylvania held on for a 54-53 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology Thursday night.

The Quakers (3-13), who broke an eight-game losing streak, led 54-49 with 1:32 to play. But NJIT (9-9) drew within a point when Penn went scoreless over those final 92 seconds.

Lucas-Perry hit the second of his two treys, then two foul shots for the five-point lead which Penn nearly blew. NJIT got two free throws from Daquan Holiday, then two more from Chris Flores, who led the Highlanders with 22 points. That pulled them within 54-53 with 46 seconds left.

But Steve Rennard missed a late 3-pointer, and P.J. Miller a drive with three seconds left.

Miles Cartwright and Darien Nelson-Henry led Penn with 12 points each. Ryan Woods and Holiday scored 10 apiece for NJIT.

RIDER-ST PETER'S

Pereira leads Rider past Saint Peter's 66-54

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Tommy Pereira scored a career-high 17 points off the bench, hitting five 3-pointers, as Rider defeated Saint Peter's 66-54 Thursday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action to win its fourth straight game.

The Broncs (10-9, 5-2), whose winning streak followed a five-game skid, trailed by nine at the 10:02 mark, but pulled ahead 28-27 on Pereira's 3-pointer en route to a 30-27 halftime lead.

The Peacocks regained a two-point advantage, but Shawn Valentine hit a 3-pointer and Pereira added two treys, making it 46-39. Saint Peter's (6-11, 1-6) could get no closer than four the rest of the way in dropping its fifth straight game.

Anthony Myles added 12 points and Jonathon Thompson 10 for Rider.

Yvon Raymond's 15 points led the Peacocks, who were 4 of 14 from long range. Desi Washington, who came in averaging 15.3 points, scored five on 2-of-14 shooting, including 1 of 10 3-pointers.

MARIST-LOYOLA (MD)

Loyola (Md.) defeats Marist 72-58

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Dylon Cormier made 7 of 8 shots from the field and finished with a game-high 19 points and six assists to lead Loyola (Md.) past Marist 72-58 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup Thursday night.

Erick Etherly scored 14 points, Julius Brooks had 12 and Anthony Winbush chipped in 10 for Loyola (13-6, 5-2), which won its fourth straight home game.

Trailing 43-31 at halftime, Marist cut the lead to single digits, 52-43, on Anell Alexis' layup with 13:01 left to play, but that was the closest the Red Foxes would get. Loyola answered with a 15-8 run to extend its lead to 67-51 with 5:22 remaining.

The Greyhounds shot 60.4 percent (29 of 48) and led by as many as 17 points.

Alex and Adam Kemp scored 14 points apiece for Marist (4-14, 1-6), which has lost eight straight.

SOUTH FLORIDA-RUTGERS

Judge scores 14, Rutgers edges South Florida 70-67

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Wally Judge scored 14 points and Martino Brock had a game-tying 3-point shot attempt rim out just before the buzzer as Rutgers defeated South Florida 70-67 on Thursday night.

Myles Mack and Eli Carter added 13 points apiece for the Scarlet Knights (12-4, 3-2 Big East), who nearly blew a seven-point lead in the final four minutes.

Jawanza Poland scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half for South Florida (9-7, 0-4), which lost its fourth straight game. Anthony Collins and Victor Rudd added 11 points apiece for the Bulls, who made their first NCAA tournament appearance a year ago.

WAGNER-CCSU

Vinales scores 30, CCSU beats Wagner 73-66

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) -- Kyle Vinales scored a game-high 30 points to lead Central Connecticut State past Wagner 73-66 Thursday night in a Northeast conference matchup.

Matt Hunter finished with 13 points and eight boards, while Adonis Burbage and Joe Efese each scored 10 to help Central Connecticut State (7-9, 3-2) win its third game in its last four tries.

After Kenneth Ortiz's 3-pointer cut the Blue Devils lead to 53-51 at the 8:02 mark, Vinales scored the next four points, sparking an 11-6 run to go up 64-57 with under 3 minutes to play.

The Blue Devils made seven free throws in the final 1:04 to seal the victory.

Central Connecticut State shot 52.2 percent (12 for 23) in the second half while holding Wagner to just 34.4 percent (11 for 32).

Ortiz finished with 18 points to lead the Seahawks (9-7, 3-2), who have not won at Central Connecticut State since 2004.

MANHATTAN-CANISIUS

Sosa helps Canisius hold off Manhattan 64-60

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Isaac Sosa scored a season-high 25 points and hit the clinching free throws as Canisius overcame a 10-point first-half deficit, then held on to beat Manhattan 64-60 and snap a two-game skid.

The Golden Griffins (11-7, 4-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) closed the first half on a 17-4 run to lead 28-25 at intermission. Canisius built its biggest lead at 60-47 with 3:57 to go, but saw it dwindle as the Jaspers reeled off 11 straight points to make it 60-58 with 36 seconds left.

After Chris Manhertz answered with two free throws with 18 seconds remaining, Michael Alvarado's layup 8 seconds later made it 62-60. Sosa hit both of his foul shots with 8 seconds to go and Shane Richards committed his only turnover of the game on Manhattan's final possession.

Harold Washington added 12 points for Canisius.

Richards and Alvarado scored 18 apiece for the Jaspers (5-12, 3-4).
